Americans of FS, what do you say instead of 'meant'? As in the past tense of mean. I cannot for the life of me think of an alternative, as 'meaned' seems all sorts of wrong right this second.

I think Americans just say "meant". That's one of the -t past participles that's still used in the US.

I've been automatically stripping those out of my writing and then couldn't work out what to do with it lol. Thanks! Good to know :)

That's what we say: 'meant'.
"What I meant to say was..."

The past tense ending in 't' that most Americans don't usually use are:
Blest, Clapt, Drest, Gilt (gild), Slipt, Smelt (smell), Spelt, Spoilt, Stript, Vext

The past tense ending in 't' that some Americans sometimes use are:
Burnt, Cleft (cleave), Dreamt, Dwelt, Leant, Leapt, Learnt, Pent (pen), Reft (reave), Rent (rend), Spilt

The past tense ending in 't' that Americans use are (most of these are the only correct form):
Bent, Built, Crept, Dealt, Felt, Knelt, Left, Lent, Lost, Meant, Sent, Shot, Slept, Spent, Wept, Went
