I’m all in favor of mixing canons, it’s just annoying when my idea of “best” doesn’t match other peoples’.

For example, I hate the way the BBC Sherlock characterization seeped into the general fanon of Sherlock Holmes in other contexts.

I'd really dislike that, too. I had such hopes for BBC Sherlock (and I love the set design like in the secret pic) but strongly disliked the characterization. I'm not sure what I'd want to consider the "best" from that adaptation, to be honest. Maybe Lestrade? And the set design.

I really loved the show for the first season or two but in the end Sherlock really does try my patience when it comes to "this guy's just an arsehole, how am I meant to root for him even a little bit?" phenomenon. Other interpretations of Holmes have their bristly and difficult to love parts but Sherlock just seems to be the very worst offender.

Seconding this. It had so much potential early on, but man it squandered every single drop of that potential.

Ultimately, BBC Sherlock only worked for me if the writers cared deeply about the interiority of the characters, and, above all, understood that Sherlock Holmes was the way he was because he was stunted and needed very badly to grown as a person. But in the end, they mostly just seemed to fanboy him and think his behavior was cool. *sigh* And then John morphed into a violent rage-monster (which was understandable up to a point, considering what he'd been put through, but was largely unenjoyable to watch, even before it eventually completely surpassed the bounds of acceptable behavior). Ugh.

DA
The rage monster John is something I couldn't articulate before, thanks for putting it onto words. They changed his characterization too much from the first season.

Oh, me too. That was pissing me off even when I was in ACD fandom and BBC Sherlock started infiltrating. At least when SH09 crept in, he was amusing. BBC intrusion made me drift away until Elementary appeared to sweeten the pot again.
