It was part of the Fox properties Disney bought and wanted to dump. It's honestly amazing they went through with producing it at all.

Yeah it seems pretty clear they saw Fox as nothing but a bunch of IPs to exploit

I figure the only reason they released Last Duel is because if you pass on it and someone else wins an Oscar off it, you feel like a huge jackass

I agree so hard, as well as Diseny's general possessiveness with everything they own.

According to the entertainment press, the sale of Fox came with a clause that they had to release everything that was on Fox's slate in theaters before sending it to streaming and they weren't allowed to cancel anything that was already in production. So it wasn't that they weren't prepared to not pass on it, it was that they were contractually obliged to not pass on it. Disney did the bare minimum that they could get away with.
