OP, the only time I've heard "huh, I wonder what that could mean" in reference to things that seem gay, it's only been in a tongue-in-cheek way of acknowledging the gay subtext. I've never heard it once being used to shut down gay theories, unless it's discussing perhaps queerbaiting, but even then it's acknowledging the gay subtext.

Then you’ve been listening to good podcasts. There really are examples of the type OP is talking about out there, and they’re definitely not tongue in cheek.
