Not super close, but close enough to get it back home in a cooler when I visit my brother.

I agree that it is problematic and requires careful handling because of the real-world connotations! But I think talking about it requires moving between and dealing with both the real-world connotations, and the purely fictional parts where the fantasy or science fiction or comic book world is fundamentally different from our own and obeys a different logic.

Digitize it and upload it everywhere?

How was Doctor Doolittle a gamble? They spent a fortune on it, and it was an established IP.

I guess the gamble was that it would buck the trend of the OG Doctor Doolittle and actually make money?

watching Shane go from the Hot Daga to having his own little show that's clearly an outlet for song writing/history/trivia has been very nice.

he's clearly having a great time and i love to see it!!!

Raleigh/Mako in Pacific Rim and Bucky/Natasha went from being almost OTPs to NOTPs for me because of the behavior of the other shippers.

I've never had a ship go from OTP to NOTP, but I have fallen out of love with ships because the shine wore off or I hated what canon did to them.

Dean/Castiel: I just disliked how they treated each other over time, Castiel deserved better than Dean tbh.
Charles/Erik: this is a personal one where I feel like the dynamic fell flat after the XM:FC and it never picked up again for me.
Steve/Bucky: sadly I hated where canon went for them, well before Endgame too as I disliked their writing in Civil War and everything else after that was just more dreck piled on top.

It doesn't jibe with an intuitive understanding of sapient beings.

I agree that it does jar against our intuitions. I don't think that's a reason that it can't be done. Science fiction and fantasy are full of things that jar against our intuitions, and don't follow the rules of the world as we're familiar with. An always-evil or always-good species is not, I don't think, more intuitively difficult to comprehend than a race of artificial intelligences, or a gestalt species, or the idea of experiencing all events through time simultaneously or chronologically, or whatever else.

And not only is that common in genre fiction, I think it's a really important and distinctive part of science fiction and fantasy as genres. That's the whole "cognitive estrangement" thing people talk about, basically. It's a feature of this kind of genre fiction, not a bug. It's one of the distinctive things that can make SF&F at its best really interesting and different from other kinds of fiction.

And I'm definitely not saying that this is actually a justification for every use of the trope. I think in most if not all cases it is really badly used. But I also think there is a level of complexity and nuance in thinking about SF&F elements in stories that people sort of skip over. Not just related to this topic, I think it's a really common thing.

Orcs aren't really a separate race or even essentially evil at their core. They were made by a Vala called Melkor, at the beginning of time in Middle Earth, by capturing, mutilating and enslaving parts of the Elven species. All Orcs hate Melkor and his lieutenant Sauron, but are forced to follow their orders on pain of death.
The Silmarillion and Morgoth's Ring have more about this, if you're curious. Myself, I'm just tired of hearing about Orcs being associated this with trope. There's more going on under the hood.

I dunno, I thought the manga was pretty fly.

Same here. I don't mind the "kitten encounters a mirror for the first time" videos where it's the animal doing something cute on its own, but I detest the ones where people are frightening or tormenting their pets for a joke. You are right; it's just cruel.

Does that mean that the Internet Archive is a minefield?

Ouch.

The Hobbit series was so-so, but it unironically revitalized a lot of older parts of the LOTR fanspaces. There's more decent stuff, Faramir and otherwise, than was heretofore seen in the late 90s. Trust me, you didn't miss much.

I'm not even sure that a was a thing
it was definitely a thing that leading certain types of films, including sci-fi or fantasy genre films meant you weren't oscar-worthy serious as an actor.

because it was nerd stuff and not for other reasons
....I think you're taking an inference I didn't imply.

I thought Kwan was based on David Carradine in Kung-Fu and the reason Shaloub played Kwan with stoner qualities was because of the rumors Carradine often did his role while on something.

OP

In season one of OUAT I hated Regina because I found her vengeance schtick immature as fuck while also being disgusted by her enslavement and rape of Graham, gaslighting Henry, imprisoning Belle, etc etc. I didn't think she deserved to be in a happy relationship with anyone, certainly not with Emma.

I didn't ship Emma with anyone, I just wanted her to have a good life with her son.

Then, early in season 2, Regina apologized to Henry. And Hook showed up and so did Hook stans, who started shipping him with Emma.

I ended up fucking loathing Hook, especially the more he and Emma looked like they might end up together. I could sort of see Hook with Regina or another villain on the road to redemption, helping each other be better and give up on vengeance, or maybe pulling each other under, but OUAT's writers sucked at writing... most things, tbh, but definitely villain redemption arcs so that I actually wanted to root for them. I ended up ditching the show in season 3 and just hanging out in fandom.

I mostly shipped Rumbelle, speaking of shittily written redemption arcs. And after Neal showed up, I didn't so much love Emma/Neal as want both of them to be happy, as romantic partners or friends and co parents, whichever.

But knowing that the writers sucked at writing ships and plots I actually cared about, I started liking the idea of Emma/Regina more, and Emma/Regina/Neal, where Regina actually continued on from that point where she admitted she'd been a controlling crappy mom to Henry, and grew into someone who took responsibility for the horrible shit she did.

Because Emma/Regina was never canon, it was never ruined for me like Emma/Hook was. Their canon romance sucked so much that I had no desire to see it rewritten by fans to not suck, and I bailed on the show before it could ruin Belle and Rumple for me.

So it turns out that sometimes what it takes to turn a NOTP into if not an OTP then at least a "yeah sure, I ship it" is an even nastier, more disgusting NOTP.

Indeed they do. At least I think I just got this thing back on course for the original ending it was going to have. Whenever it happens. (Either way a nice little break from the main WIP that's now over 80,000 words.)

Buns and cat are spending as much time as possible curled up or flopped over as close as they can to the heating vents, otherwise their usual whimsical selves. ;)

Clooney did Batman in '97! And, I mean, he did get mocked but a lot of that was just the batnipples

You clearly haven't stepped into D&D spaces since WOTC said they were going to downplay that sort of stuff. Especially since they put their money where their mouth is and dialed back the 'eeeeeeeviiiiiiiil' for the Vistani. (And that was downplaying negative stereotypes on a human ethnicity explicitly based on the Romani.)

yes precisely. he wasn't considered an oscar worthy actor and at the time he wasn't in oscar bait or oscar "worthy" films. He was still a getting the "TV" stink off, when TV was a bit of a stink. Then around 2005 or 6-ish he stopped doing anything wild that didn't have a respected director attached or serious energy. That's not true of margot robbie or adam driver.
