I don't think this joke is about the lack of stars cast then, as compared to now, but about how now a) many big-time stars will enthusiastically do nerd stuff, which was way more dubious at the time of the first movie and b) casting is now more about commodification of the IP rather than who's gonna do the best job.

I mean, it's totally about b, but I'm not really seeing where you get a. I'm not even sure that a was a thing...what nerd stuff was avoided by big name stars because it was nerd stuff and not for other reasons?

it was definitely a thing that leading certain types of films, including sci-fi or fantasy genre films meant you weren't oscar-worthy serious as an actor.

because it was nerd stuff and not for other reasons
....I think you're taking an inference I didn't imply.

Clooney did Batman in '97! And, I mean, he did get mocked but a lot of that was just the batnipples

yes precisely. he wasn't considered an oscar worthy actor and at the time he wasn't in oscar bait or oscar "worthy" films. He was still a getting the "TV" stink off, when TV was a bit of a stink. Then around 2005 or 6-ish he stopped doing anything wild that didn't have a respected director attached or serious energy. That's not true of margot robbie or adam driver.

That's a fair point and you're totally right.

Although actually, looking it up, Adam Driver hasn't really done any blockbuster stuff other than Star Wars, so he's maybe kind of an exception to this - most of the stuff he's done has been with prestige directors. It's lots of Baumbach, Jarmusch, Soderbergh. Kind of an interesting career.

I waver on him being an exception because he was on Girls, which was def prestige but was still TV, when he signed onto Star Wars. Technically that was his first big leading role, rather than the supporting and bit parts (or leading but indie films) he'd had otherwise. But I agree, in his filmography Star Wars sticks out.
