I saw people do this at karaoke too and I was like "Really? You're not even going to reach a live audience here, you're afraid of sounding gay to like these 25-40 people in this little bar?" (Admittedly it happened most often at the country bar out in the boonies; did not happen at the gay bar, oddly enough!) Though there was one amusing incident where my s/o planned to change the lyrics to "My Guy" to "My Girl"... and it would've been great except that the backing track vocalists burst in with "my guy - my guy - my guy~" XD

Anyway, I always had fun embracing the gay, or the lines about being a "man". Which, in hindsight perhaps should've been a clue but oh well.

Relatedly, one of the reasons I adore Richard Shindell so much is he straight out writes songs from first person perspective with female narrators. Off the top of my head he's sung multiple songs from the perspective of a woman whose husband/lover is going off to war, a grandmother looking for her grandchild who was stolen by the military as a child, and Mary Magdalene as Jesus's wife. I mean they're excellent songs regardless because he is an amazing songwriter, also a phenomenal guitarist with a fascinating voice, but dude. One more reason to respect him.

Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly does first-person songs with female narrators too - "Everything's Turning to White" is the classic, but not the only one.

Martyn Joseph, a Welsh singer/songwriter, also has done this a few times - "Working Mother" is a song of his that comes to mind, from the perspective of a sex worker trying to provide for her kids.
