This is one of my favourite things about Kate Rusby, that she doesn't change pronouns in her traditional stuff.

It's also one of my least favourite things, because, like you say, it really shouldn't be something noteworthy.

Kate Rusby is just wonderful overall though. All her English/Scottish/Irish traditionals and her original stuff.

Heck yeah for Kate Rusby!

It's a well known rule, you can only change the pronouns if it makes the song more gay, not less

This rule is good and true.

This just reminds me of the time I was in a department store and heard a male cover of Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" where they only changed "boyfriend" to "girlfriend." I hate to call any music pointless and a waste of everyone's time, but that? That was pointless and a waste of everyone's time and I bear a deep grudge that it's going to waste braincells in my head for the rest of time.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do that when you can have Cobra Starship singing "I Kissed a Boy" and also calling out the exhibitionism of the original song all in one hit?

I don't mind it mostly, because I think people can be talking about a specific person sometimes, but I really enjoy it when the pronouns aren't changed but the emotion remains. But that 1st person to 3rd person makes me mad.

Corrollary to this: changing pronouns and sometimes whole phrases in christmas songs, like Buble did with "Santa buddy" THE SONG IS SUPPOSED TO BE SEXY WHY SING IT IF YOU'RE GOING TO MAKE IT WEIRD(ER).

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Because you reminded me of the worst thing that's ever happened to Christmas, I thought I'd look up the lyrics to see what else Buble's masculinity is too fragile to cope with, and it turns out it's worse than I though. He changed so many lyrics that...at that point, you may as well just write a new song.

I think the worst one for me is that "Santa Baby" doesn't just become "Santa Buddy", it also sometimes becomes "Santa Pally". I'm banning Buble from music until he invents a time machine, goes back in time and prevents this abomination from ever coming into existence.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Santa Buddy". "Santa Buddy".

I'm torn between laughing my ass off at how stupid that sounds and, like you, also being like, "..why?"

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Buble should’ve sucked it up and been gay for four minutes. Santa Buddy just makes me think of one of those budget Airbuds movies

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Buble singing about a magical gift-bringing golden retriever would have been so much better than what we got.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT, but what we got always sounded to me like Buble's in the closet and doesn't want his wife to know that he's having an affair with Santa.

I saw people do this at karaoke too and I was like "Really? You're not even going to reach a live audience here, you're afraid of sounding gay to like these 25-40 people in this little bar?" (Admittedly it happened most often at the country bar out in the boonies; did not happen at the gay bar, oddly enough!) Though there was one amusing incident where my s/o planned to change the lyrics to "My Guy" to "My Girl"... and it would've been great except that the backing track vocalists burst in with "my guy - my guy - my guy~" XD

Anyway, I always had fun embracing the gay, or the lines about being a "man". Which, in hindsight perhaps should've been a clue but oh well.

Relatedly, one of the reasons I adore Richard Shindell so much is he straight out writes songs from first person perspective with female narrators. Off the top of my head he's sung multiple songs from the perspective of a woman whose husband/lover is going off to war, a grandmother looking for her grandchild who was stolen by the military as a child, and Mary Magdalene as Jesus's wife. I mean they're excellent songs regardless because he is an amazing songwriter, also a phenomenal guitarist with a fascinating voice, but dude. One more reason to respect him.

Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly does first-person songs with female narrators too - "Everything's Turning to White" is the classic, but not the only one.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Martyn Joseph, a Welsh singer/songwriter, also has done this a few times - "Working Mother" is a song of his that comes to mind, from the perspective of a sex worker trying to provide for her kids.

Remember Michael Buble's weird no homo cover of Santa Baby where he put it into Santa Buddy?

That was something.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree. There are occasions where I understand why they felt the need to change it (as in, situations where the song just doesn't make much sense if they don't), but the majority of the time when they change the pronouns it kind of ruins a cover for me.

Shout out to Kings Of Leon for their fucking awesome cover of Dancing On My Own, in which they don't change any pronouns.

black is the colour has the added bonus of being utterly fantastic in almost any rendition

(cara dillon gets my overall vote)

I am cranky about any covers of Big Yellow Taxi that fuck with the slam/man near-rhyme.
