Reposting others' fics for archival purposes

(Anonymous) 2021-12-05 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
What's the thinking in fandom these days about this:
Old, dead, obscure fandom and fics on a single obscure fan page that's miraculously still around. Inactive author. We're talking over a decade.

Would it be beyond the pale to repost to AO3 and orphan the works, just to get them in another place? Keep my own copies and hold off until if/when the fansite finally dies? Never ever, that's too tacky to do at all?

I'm on the fence about it because it is an inherently sketchy practice to post anything belonging to someone else without expressed permission but it is also a means of preserving content for future generations. My favorite fanfic author had her works posted with full credit ascribed to her on AO3 by one of her fans years after her death. Now new fans can enjoy her work. Whether or not she herself would have been okay with it, who can say. It's a philosophical argument that doesn't have a clear cut answer.

If you do decide to go through with it, naturally doublecheck to see if the author isn't posting elsewhere, possibly under another name, and of course give them full credit upon Orphaning, perhaps also citing the website you found it at.

Better check first if AO3 has a policy about posting work that's not your own

100% hold it to yourself

i've known fics i've loved where the author deleted or abandoned it because they no longer like it or want it around or want it associated with themselves or whatever; reposting against that without express permission is surely thoroughly wrong

Wtf, don't just fucking repost SOMEONE ELSE'S WORK to another site because aRcHIvez or whatever, the fuck is wrong with you? YOU ARE NOT THE AUTHOR!!!!

You can make a point without screaming at people and/or foaming at the mouth.

It was just a question. You drowned out any point you had by making your comment so immature and foolish sounding.

Don't do it.

Definitely save your own copies, and try to contact the author to see if they'd mind if you archived their stuff on AO3. If the fan page was managed by someone other than the author, you could try contacting them as well to see if they know more about the situation.

AO3/Transformative works whole-sale uploads archives for...archival purposes all the time. Contact them and see if they'll do that, if the author is truly gone.
