On the one hand, both are bad. On the other hand, making others miserable is a lot worse than doing it to yourself.

NAYRT

I know that this is generally the way that people think. But - from a moral point of view - ought we think that way? Is that actually a viable distinction to draw?

I think the viable distinction is that you have a choice and can choose to make yourself miserable. Whereas others have no choice in the matter and you are doing it against their will. You still shouldn't want to make yourself miserable, because you matter. But at least you chose it. Others didn't.

DA, but agreed.

da, but... yes? Obviously there's a discussion to be had about why people feel the need to do things like starve themselves for roles, but you can't compare that (which doesn't hurt anyone other than the person doing it) to something like someone deciding to prepare for a villain role by being verbally abusive to their coworkers. One thing has other innocent victims. The other doesn't.

Yes.

getting some rats is very easily dealt with, hathaway talked about how she had health issues for years. i don't believe that the former is a lot worse

I'm sorry, but I firmly believe that it is far worse to involve unwilling participants. Others who don't get a say shouldn't be forced into whatever it is you are doing. I feel really bad for Anne, and I hate that the film industry promotes that kind of thing. But the fact that actors (and directors) are now being called out for making others miserable is a great step forward.

i can't relate to that kind of blanket thinking. context is important to me

Phil is using direct context? And how is it blanket thinking? It makes perfect sense that both are awful, but one involves dragging other people into the situation.

to you maybe, but that requires the context that you specifically aren't going to panic about that. I have shitty relatives and I would much rather fuck up my body deliberately than wonder if one of them was sending me a threat.
