I don't think 'we' gave anybody an Oscar, unless there's more members of the Academy than I thought. I also don't think extreme method acting *is* all that lauded anymore, in either form. Most discussions I see of it do highlight the fact that it's, well, extreme, and for very little reward. Terrorising your coworkers with live animals is a dick move, and destroying your body for a role hasn't had a good reputation since The Machinist. The Hollywood system itself might be slow to change, but I feel like on-the-street opinion of method acting has been going downhill for about 20 years now.
