Is writing about skin-walkers condemned because describing them gives them power/makes them more likely to exist or show up? Or like not naming school shooters or publishing their manifestos in case it inspires copycats? (If this is one of the taboo things it's cool if you don't answer.)

I kinda always think I like love/hate pairings for exactly that edgy dynamic, but then when I sit down to write them, I end up dismissing the hate component and writing at best, some banter and inner conflict. I guess it's about the 'what if' exploration that fanfiction allows - I see those love/hate pairings as potentially just 'love' pairings, you just have to subtract the hate component from them, i.e., the reason that had caused hate or the reason that is instigating it. I mean, I try not to completely rewrite characters' personalities for that and leave some edge, I just don't want to write about the hate, since it's already abundant in the canon and we certainly haven't gathered here to be 100% canon-compliant.

Nothing about your comment is accurate. That is not an accurate description of Luke in TLJ.

And her lekku were embarrassingly bad.

Totally on-board with this

L.A. Schools

(Anonymous) 2021-12-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Los Angeles schools are a fucking mess. I've been writing a fanfic for an older show, set in LA in the eighties and trying to find out which schools the characters' kids would have gone to is impossible. The LA school system seems have made it so there is no reliable way to find out who would have gone where. Does anyone know any way to decode the mess that is LA schools?

It is for the same reason Muslims don't like paintings of Mohammed.

I read this wendigo one and it was pretty good.

Windwalkers by R. Michael Burns. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B098RW83B1?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860

(I picked it up initially because he was my sophomore English teacher, lol. He was a really good teacher)

One solution would be just have em go to private schools

I get this, and yet...I dislike canon!Xander from Buffy so much that I was thrilled to find out he has an almost entirely different fanon personality in fic when he's paired with Spike.

Not one of the ones from yesterday, got mine a few days ago. I had a pretty similar reaction to you, but feeling fine by now. Hope you'll get there soon too!

Same.

AYRT--huh, I always understood the Muslim ban on figural religious art as a veneration thing; that images of him were disrespectful because only Allah could make the form of living things, and doing otherwise risked idolatry.

I feel that. Had some unusual ice storms a few years back, and as much as that sucked, it's preferable to what's going on now. I want my seasons back, and all the bugs dead/hiding in the winter.

ayrt

This is coming from an Anglo (or bilagáana), who spent 11 years on the Navajo reservation growing up, so take that as you will. Some things are taboo because they are revered, and some are taboo because they are not right. Skin-walkers have some connection to spirituality, but it's... twisted. And yes, there is at least some wariness that speaking of them will summon them.

Well, in my main fandom there's a ship where one dude is usually written pretty in line with his canon personality, and the other dude, who is canonically a violent egotist criminal gang member who kills people both to rob the corpses so he can buy fancy clothes and for shits and giggles, is written as an emo guy with a heart of gold hidden behind a nonviolent pseudo-bad-boy persona, so I'd say that's pretty OOC

NAYRT--that sucks that that's your only option; my work was trying to get the stragglers who haven't had their shots at all to come in, and threw it open for booster seekers, so I got mine at our headquarters. Taking the bus there was riskier than going inside to get the shot.

I had a coworker who just got one at a local high school after work, and everyone stood outside until it was their turn. Safer than crowding inside, but cold!

Ugh yes. I just went to feed my pets and smelled the distinctive smell of stinkbug in the hallway, and I can't figure out where so I can flush it. :P

At least the mosquitos seem to be gone. I live near a creek/marsh area and could hardly leave the house some days the last few summers without a cloud of them immediately descending.

same tbh. I can't watch tv or be on the internet without being sideswiped by a reminder of how shitty the world is right now, the only game I can blank out on is Sims. the only drawback is that our gaming computer's desk position strains my carpal tunnel. eh, I've got a brace, it's fine it'll be fine...

Uh, wear a KN95 or N95 mask like anybody who has to work with Covid patients every day?

This is a silly reason not to get the booster.

In the midwest and it's unseasonably warm.

It's climate change and we're probably all boned.

totally fine. the injection spot is a tiny bit sore but that only affected which side I slept on. other than that, no issues. even got a five mile walk in today before the wind and storms came in.

Moderna booster reporting in, doing just fine with no side effects aside from the sore arm. It's more sore than it was for my second shot but not as bad as the first? So all in all, I can't really complain here.

Thanks! It's pretty cool that your teacher published a book.
