Los Angeles is a really big place, but if you have an actual address for the characters, then the school district should be determined by that (Bonita Unified School District serves the communities of San Dimas and La Verne, and part of Glendora, Keppel Union School District serves the far eastern parts of the city of Palmdale, etc.).

Here's a list of the school districts:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_districts_in_Los_Angeles_County,_California

But if you're talking about Los Angeles Unified School District, which is one of the largest in the US and serves over half a million students currently, yeah, that might be harder. I'd maybe go on Google maps, find the nearest few schools, make sure they were there in whatever year you are setting it and choose one. Now, of course, there are bus routes that only serve particular areas and a lot of people stick with that, but a lot of school districts allow students to attend any school within the district as long as the parents take the responsibility of getting them there. I'm pretty sure exceptions are made for nearby districts if there's reasonable circumstances - I don't know if that would be more or less lax in the 1980s.

Sadly, it seems to be the LAUSD that would serve these characters. I think I may just take the easy option and make up a school. Sometimes the only sane response is to say sod realism and take the easy option. Thank you for the help though.

Pick an address/neighborhood, go to Zillow, and click on a house. That will give you the school district, and it probably hasn't changed unless the school is very new.

I was thinking of suggesting that, since fiction writers make up establishments all the time even when the setting is a real-world location. I've known people who read a fic set in their hometown and they were like "okay so yeah there is a restaurant with this name, but it's on the other side of town and is an entirely different kind of restaurant". So honestly even if you got the right school, if it's a real school, you might have someone read the fic who actually went there and noticed some detail that's off...

So eh. No one's going to rag on you for saying "That school doesn't really exist!" It really does seem like the sanest option, go for it. =)
