But if you're talking about Los Angeles Unified School District, which is one of the largest in the US and serves over half a million students currently, yeah, that might be harder. I'd maybe go on Google maps, find the nearest few schools, make sure they were there in whatever year you are setting it and choose one. Now, of course, there are bus routes that only serve particular areas and a lot of people stick with that, but a lot of school districts allow students to attend any school within the district as long as the parents take the responsibility of getting them there. I'm pretty sure exceptions are made for nearby districts if there's reasonable circumstances - I don't know if that would be more or less lax in the 1980s.

So eh. No one's going to rag on you for saying "That school doesn't really exist!" It really does seem like the sanest option, go for it. =)
