Wow, I thought that was a WIP pic...

(Anonymous) 2021-12-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
right? I'm like nice sketch, I wonder what it's going to look like when it's done...

oh it's done. oh. oh, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, yep. And I'd be more impressed if it was fanart done by an amateur. But professional art that people are expected to pay for as part of an illustrated work? Sorry, but no.

Oooof. Yes I see where you're coming from. That's nice for fanart....

I wish people would stop abandoning actually talented people for those of Internet fame just to sell things.

I mean, without having anything to compare it to, I think this is nice? But I'm not like... an art person lol.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-19 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I like it too - from the very little that's on the secret, anyway.

I agree, I think it looks very good. But I’m absolutely not an artist, or super knowledgeable about the artistic process and methods in general, especially when it comes to character art(the only art I have knowledge about is paintings and sculptures I learned about in school or in museums). But I do get where others are coming from too. Especially if the standard for art in these books is usually a bit higher. Or at least a bit more colored in, which is why I can understand why some people are saying it looks unfinished.

Same tbh. And I tend to like the "sketch" style in art because I like seeing the process and it lends the art a kind of "living" feel.

da agreed lol. i think making it appeal to foreign nonfans is good to make it look sketch-like because it actually makes me intrigued and ive been avoiding this show? novel? (idk) like the plague for a while because so many mutuals have been obsessing over it. underwhelm is good to draw in people like me who are fed up with others trying to impress them as a way to get them into things Hahahahahaha

Late reply is late, but IMHO the main issue is that Seven Seas brought on digital artists who appear to work mostly in color. There's nothing WRONG with color illustrations, but working in BW vs color can be very different in terms of what makes a piece feel finished/polished/etc. Contrast with the mdzs illustrations which are taken from the Russian edition and show a greater grasp of how to use line and value to add visual interest to a black and white piece. Neither is "bad," but I think a good chunk of the illustrations in Scum Villain and TGCF look like "I finished the line layer and maybe did some light shading but don't really know how to further polish this without color."
