I kind of relate to this. I mean... people can play what they want to play but among the cosplay community these days it's like... anytime I don't recognize a costume and ask what it's from: "Genshin Impact!" It's like, yeesh, doesn't anyone cosplay anything else anymore?

Same thing happened with Overwatch and My Hero Academia not long ago, though, so it'll pass and there'll be some new hot thing that I don't have time/energy/money to get into soon enough. :D

The thing that hurts me, vis-a-vis Genshin and cosplay, is that the bootleg shops are churning out screen-printed versions of these costumes that are so, so, so sad. It's one thing to screen-print a MHA uniform that's just two colors, but screen-printing what should be literal 3 layer outfits covered in braid, lace, jewels, embroidery, etc as a single layer...smock, basically? It hurts. It hurts to see people wasting their money on it. I know that it would otherwise take so much expert work to make it accurate with all that detail, or pay a commissioner over 500 for each one, but it sort of loops around to the secret OP's point. It's just irritating to know that it's only really Genshin getting this treatment so that the same youngsters throwing money at the game itself are content with a $200 smock from China.

...I think I'm fortunate in that I haven't seen that. Most of the cosplayers I know personally are either making their own, or ordering ... well okay granted since I don't play the game and know the source material, the things they're ordering appear to me to be very detailed. (These are people who have been around a couple decades, and I have seen them get a costume or wig in and go "yeah no, this is not going to work" and send it back, so I assume they know what they're doing with GI too.) I guess I'm not surprised people are getting ripped off on overpriced-but-subpar bootlegs too though. :P

And actually on that note, I can't be actually annoyed about GI being everywhere when many of the costumes I'm seeing my friends wearing are pretty cool. It's just weird that all of a sudden every nice-looking cosplay I see that I can't immediately identify turns out to be GI, y'know? Like there has to be other stuff out there that people are into right now...

For real! Yeah it's like...I don't ever intend to gatekeep cosplay but sometimes I'm just like, love yourselves and stop sending money to China please.

Yeah, whenever I see photos of people doing cosplay and it's obvious they're using some premade nylon thing (that they don't even bother to iron out the folding wrinkles?) I just find it kind of sad.

Sad is the right word for it. Like "Oh? Awwww....."

Cosplay can be hard, I say that as a professional as well as someone who's done it for over 20 years. I would love more people to get into it through easy gateways but I'm honestly not sure that a screen-printed nylon smock is the choice of gateway. Didn't my generation decide in the 80s that we were done with printed plastic Halloween costumes?
