Execution is always the problem. I think that is why subversions and twists have been so popular lately, there is nowhere to hide a weak story when telling one straight. A weak writer can hide a lot of sins behind a twist, even a poorly executed one, and with a subversion they can always claim it was the readers' fault for not getting it if it doesn't land.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of Big Twist plots because IMO, a lot of writers overestimate just how amazing their big twist is. If that's all the plot has to offer, it's easy for the ending or the big reveal to fall disappointingly flat.
