lol I mean part of why is probably because Kevin Sorbo is a horrible actor so you can't imagine anything but Kevin Sorbo, whereas Lucy Lawless can actually act some

It is always easier to brush a writer or director being a piece of shit under the carpet than an actor, you don't have to watch them perform. With the actor, they are always there, reminding you of their arrant stupidity by their very constant appearance. Whedon ran a casting couch, but he's a writer/director and isn't visible in his work; Polanski raped a kid but he's never on screen so you can sorta forget it as it gets lost behind other people's work; Sorbo is front and center dispensing lessons on kindness and equality he obviously has utter contempt for in real life, and there is no way to hide that. It still amazes me that Sorbo managed to take in none of the lessons his character dispensed each week tho, how dumb and thoughtless was/is he?

I love Lucy Lawless, and tbh, Xena and Hercules were big role models for me/I always felt like Hercules (in the show) was my dad (despite my dad being in my life, not looking like KS AT ALL LMAO) SO I just try to avoid whatever other things he's in because I don't want my perception/visualization of the person to be... shattered By the fact that the guy's just a person who likely makes choices/has perspectives I don't agree with. So I don't bother deep diving.

I did enjoy the really shitty SyFy movie with him and Nina Dobrev and that man I found attractive for no good reason (I didn't want to find him attractive)...Never Cry Werewolf or something. Truly awful but such a good time. I need to watch it again lol.

Given how much of a melange Ancient Egypt was, you can pretty much cast anyone and their face would fit in most roles. Ancient Egypt is one of those civilizations that you really can, with the exception of a few specific people, genuinely be raceblind in with regards casting. Getting the usual, what is the term, performatively woke screamers to understand that would be another problem.

I think in the drama, they were trying to be more obvious with the generational differences, but I do agree a more attractive older actor for Wen Ruohan would have been very nice.
