OP said that some jokes are almost lifted word for word. That’s a level of copying that goes beyond descriptions or characterization lifted word for word, and it’s not petty to want acknowledgment if quotes and jokes are being lifted.

I don't believe accusations of plagiarism without receipts.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-26 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, fair enough? And OP even mentions they don’t expect anyone to automatically believe them without evidence, so...

OP also says 2 instances, which I find even harder to believe. Also, I question whether OP has read every single story in the fandom or if OP is certain they haven't been doing any accidental plagiarism of their own from a 3rd source that all 3 parties have lifted from. Eh? The writer's mind is a tricky thing.

I don’t get why you find it hard to believe. Why does them saying “in 2 instances” suddenly push it further past the realm of possibility to you? And I don’t see why you think OP hasn’t done their own due diligence, considering crediting is something they clearly view as good form. Some people can be hypocrites, sure. But questioning this based on practically nothing, makes it seem like you’re a bit too quick to throw that possibility out there. There’s skepticism about situations and stories where you aren’t being given all the details, which is fair, and something OP is clearly aware was already a likely response to the secret. And then there’s needles cynicism, where the worst possible view of a person and their story is assumed to be the most likely, even with little basis for those assumptions.

It’s fine to believe OP or not. But it seems like they’re sure enough that they came up with certain fan characterizations that it seems unlikely that they wouldn’t have checked to make sure they weren’t committing any “accidental plagiarism”. They might not have read every fic in the fandom, but you don’t need to in order to find out where an idea comes from. Unless the fanon comes from a site or fic that was deleted or purged, of course. Then it does become harder.

“Eh? The writer's mind is a tricky thing.”

Not in my experience? I might be forgetful about a lot of things, but inspiration isn’t one of them. I don’t think it’s remotely true that forgetfulness of borrowed ideas or where you got inspiration from is some universal experience among writers. I can only speak for me, of course. But I find it hard to believe that this is some universal experience among other writers. And “a writers mind is a tricky thing” is a new one on me. I’ve never heard that adage before, and don’t really agree that it is one.

You are contesting the mind tricky thing? Let alone the writer's mind? Possibly, you are terribly naive. Without the complexity of the tricksy writer's mind's subconscious workings (including mysterious inspirations out of nowhere) stories would have no depth, no evolving and convoluted threads that magically sync up into a glorious and resounding climax. Have you never had that happen to you? If not, then I'm sorry. If so, you cannot claim you know where each and every inspiration comes from.

In any event, just google "the writer's mind" if you don't believe me, because yes, it *is* a very well-known phenomenon among writers.

I said it’s a new one on me. No need to be condescending about it. Although I get the feeling you enjoy being that way. And I’m no less of a writer for not hearing every adage. Nor does it make me naive, because that’s an absurd thing to say in this context. Especially because I was only contesting the “trickiness” of the authors mind only relating to forgetting where ideas come from. Because that was the only context you brought it up for. It seems like you didn’t think that through before going on your little patronizing ego-trip. Because plagiarism and not citing sources does not a good published author make. Fanfic writers can get away with it more, but only to a degree. So not remembering where whole ideas are lifted from constantly can’t be a general writer “thing”.

And yes, I’ve experienced that rush before. But I remember where all the threads lead back to. Just because it happens to some people doesn’t mean that writers are generally incapable of following their threads of inspiration back to the source. And I’m no less of a writer for that either.

I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but wow you’re insufferable.

You're the one who claims to understand where each and every inspiration for your stories come from, so, I'm not the arrogant one in this boat. Also, you're a liar, so there's that.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-26 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant as far as entire ideas and searchable quotes comes from. You’re splitting hairs by breaking it down to the smallest details. Because everyone knows by now that nothing is truly original. Every idea has been done a thousand times, and people are just trying to put fresh spins on it. But you can be damn sure that if I can’t remember where a whole idea or quote comes from, I will look it up.

You’ve done nothing but willfully misunderstand where everyone you’ve talked to and replied to is trying to say, and attempting to use pedantry and technicalities as gotchas. While being smug and self-superior along the way.

Where did I lie? You’re completely full of shit. I’ve lied about nothing, because everything I’ve said is how I truly feel. Your willful misunderstanding and assumptions don’t make everything you disagree with a lie.
