WolfStar? Really? Why can't fandom just use NAMES. It took me way too long to figure who in hell this ship was.

And yes, the three (four?) merry pranksters or whatever were kind of douches.

The website fictionalley was huge back then and insisted on each ship having a name. Some of them, like wolfstar, gained a life of their own and became the main fandom name for the ship. Others didn't.

I have never liked fandom 'ship names. Half the time i'm just going 'what? who?' and am confused, the other half, I'm recoiling in loathing.

Same. Hated those names. Roswell and Harry Potter were really bad for it.

I usually don't. My new main fandom has some funny ones that I can't help but love.

God, but I know. Stop having fun, guys.

*rolls eyes*
Yeah, 'cause in all of fandom, nobody ever bitches about anything ever.

Same. Given the artwork I thought it was the main characters from whatever YA series someone made secrets about a week or so ago since they bore a resemblance to the characters on those covers. Oops!

The artwork *is* nice, but yeah, i'd never had connected it to any HP character, ever.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-29 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Same!!!

And then I thought it was maybe the name of a fic. And then I realized oh, maybe this is supposed to be Siriu-- yup. That's Remus. Still thought it was the name of some popular fic, not the actual ship name.

At least WolfStar makes intuitive sense. (As long as you know it's talking about Potter, so I was confused for a bit on this secret.) The wolf guy and the guy with a star name that's most likely to be his partner. Most Potter ship names are nonsensical, or require some really tortured logic (like 'Harmony' sounding sort of like a blending of Harry and Hermione's names, if you mispronounce them in an odd way).

Harmony. See, if I saw that, my brain would instantly go to Angel:The Series, and my favorite blonde vampire (after Spike). :D

I hated that ship name, and I was in the ship. Smooshed names only work if they are actually the character's names smooshed. That just sounds pretentious. I didn't love the other alternative, Pumpkin Pie, but it was a little bit better.

.......wtf is 'Pumpkin Pie'? Other than a delicious snack? I mean...how does that mean...anything?

[personal profile] philstar22 2021-12-29 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was reference to a really popular fic? That was the name used on fictionalley and was the only big alternative to harmony. Still didn't like it, but I hated the harmony name.

I'm gonna guess Pumpkin Pie is something involving a Weasley. Though I do remember on Fiction Alley there was so much misogyny towards Ginny it was awful. Lot of people hated Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione and spun it into a hatred for the Weasleys which I feel is a starting factor in the Weasley bashing that is prevalent now.

Not to say hating those ships mean you hate the weasleys but....eh

How weird. I'm not interested in m/f 'ships 99% of the time, but to hate on a whole family 'cause you want your m/m is so stupid.

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2021-12-29 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
They just took special offense to Ginny being pretty and capable and well liked or something. So much hand wringing over "so many boyfriends" .

TBH Ginny is one of two characters who became my faves as a reaction to bullshit hate towards them.

That was one of my least favorite parts of the fandom back when I actually was in it and that ship. It was sometimes really hard to avoid character bashing. I didn't love Ron, although I didn't hate him. But I loved Ginny, just not with Harry (tended to ship her with Neville). And I hate character bashing even of characters I hate.

jfc I still didn't get it until someone else said it openly...for fuck's sake it's the DOG star. He's a DOG. It's WOLF and DOG. DOG DOG DOG. How many characters have star-related names? Basically all of the Black and Malfoy contingent for starters...

I'm so glad I never got into HP fandom shipping in any iteration.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-12-29 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
wolfstar is shorter. the secret mentions both names *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2021-12-29 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed Wolfstar was the name of some anime and didn't even bother reading the secret further.

Right? However 'logical' it might be, my brain did not instantly go to HP.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret says Sirius, Remus and Snape. What other piece of media has characters with those names?
