I often wondered why more of the fic for that ship wasn't darker and angstier. Maybe because I was older when I first got into it? Or all the books had come out and I just read it in one go? But yeah, that whole dynamic should have been more messed up than it was. Obviously some fic addressed it, but not to the extent you'd expect.
