What are your favorite and least favorite ship naming conventions in your fandoms?

I love my main fandom's cracky, sexy names for villain ships. Specifically Angbang and Silverfisting. Just fun.

Really, that's my favorite method of ship names in general: just have fun with it and give us something amusing. Second favorite method would be names that actually combine the characters names, like Russingon or Spuffy.

Least favorites: really cutesy ones that sound cloying and annoying.

I hope whoever came up with Angbang is having a very good day every day. That's genius.

Being the old fart, I support the First Character X Second Character format. Or just a simple / . I'm not averse to the more whimsical names, as long as they are sufficiently whimsical, but just smooshing names together to get a portmanteau isn't good enough for me.

Whimsical names are the best ship names. I usually tend to do character 1/character 2 format for most ships with a few exceptions where the ship names are fun sounding.

joins you in oldfartville. Give me the names please, I don't have time nor attention span to decode the secret words.

I hated how CSI named their pairings. https://talk.csifiles.com/threads/ship-name-song-thread-list-updated-november-7-2008.50638/ It also a bit hilarious with how nonsensical some of them are. Though, Greg/Nick being The Love always seemed so sweet to me.

The MCU pairing names can be pretty annoying as well. Especially when you get into the weird names for Steve/Bucky depending on what version of the characters they are (like Shrinkyclinks).

Huh, I OTP shipped GSR for a coupe of years back in the 00's, but I guess I only had eyes for my ship, because I never realized how goofy most of the ship names were. Personally I think GSR was a great ship name. It was simple, it was unsentimental (like Grissom and Sarah were most of the time), it was a play on "gunshot residue," and it was following in the footsteps of MSR--one of the greats. But I feel like I lucked out because most of the other ship names are pretty derpy.

Sorry, Sara.

Wow, you know you've been out of a fandom for a long-ass time when you spell your old fave's name wrong. I feel old.

I don't like most of the inventive ship-names but the out-there terms for shipping dynamics are very fun because by then you're already past the gates. ShrinkyClinks and ShrunkyClunks and all it's variations amuse me greatly.

Least favorite are any name fusions. I don't really have a favorite.

I mostly prefer portmanteaus. There was a while in my late teens and early twenties where I wanted to reject portmanteaus because they seemed silly and immature. But then I got old enough that I stopped caring about perceived maturity, and accepted that portmanteaus are typically the most effective and convenient way of naming ships. Portmanteaus allow people to identify the ship easily even with minimal knowledge of the canon and/or fandom, they're easily searchable, and they cut down on word-clutter when one is writing meta or otherwise talking about their ship.

That said, if a ship is old and didn't use a portmanteau in its heyday, then newbs trying to give it a portmanteau will make me excessively annoyed. If you refer to Mulder/Scully as Sculder, I will probably block you so I don't have to see it.

Some portmanteaus should've been better thought out, though. Jisbon, for example, is so hilariously bad that...well I kind of love it, because it makes me laugh, but if I actively shipped Jane/Lisbon and had to see that fucking ship name everywhere, I would hate it.

The best portmanteaus from HP are anything involving Snape. Snarry. Snoldemort. Snupin. Snack. Snumbledore. Snermione. Snon. Snagrid. Snaco. Snellatrix. Snilch. Snitwick. Snuna. Snucious. Snacklebolt. Snobby. (I could do this all day)

Every single one of these is a gift that keeps on giving, oh my god.

I love First Name/First Name or FNFN or 11/10 FN x FN yeah that's the good stuff. I just want to know who we're talking about please god fandom is a chaotic mish-mash of a melting pot.

I hate smoosh names (stucky or stony) because folks with short names are screwed and they are mostly a hateful mouthful. I hate titled ship names (Science Bros or WolfStar (new to me!)) because I don't know who/what fandom is being talked about (So they're find if someone makes like Rachel Ray and writes what the name stands for right after writing the weird name).

With smoosh names, even longer names can be awful when people won't know what spelling to use. Like the variations for Geralt/Jaskier or Geralt/Jaskier/Yennefer.

I actually really like the more figurative/conceptual ones. I know people think they're less intuitive than the name smushes, but I don't care.

Once Upon a Time was full of them: Sleeping Warrior (Aurora|Sleeping Beauty and Mulan), Snow Wolf (Snow White and Ruby|Red Riding Hood), Swan Queen (Emma Swan and Regina). Ditto for The Flash: ColdWave (Leonard Snart|Captain Cold and Mick Rory|Heatwave), ColdFlash (Leonard Snart|Captain Cold and Barry Allen|The Flash), SnowStorm (Caitlin Snow and Ronnie Raymond|Firestorm).

But the absolute best, hands down, is from the MCU.....Stark Spangled Banner (Tony Stark, Steve Rogers|Captain America, Bruce Banner).

Yes! They are so much fun.
Also if you are in enough fandoms namesmashes aren't actually helpful

Honestly, I hate namexname-- it's so much harder for me to read than using a /.

Portmanteaus and creative ship names are a case by case basis. I get annoyed when people use the same ___ Husbands for multiple ships.

My favorite silly one is Air Conditioning, for Crowley and Aziraphale, from way back.

tbh I love all terrible naming conventions. They make me laugh. Especially when the naming conventions are math equations. It's FANTASTIC.
