Is it a gripe or just... wanting something like that but more diverse? You can understand why something is the way it is and still want to make your own version that's more to your liking?

Wanting a story of a similar nature that's diverse isn't a gripe. Levelling criticism at a book for not being diverse when the setting is about as white as can be is a gripe for sure.
