You know what, this means nothing. If you really want to support those fics then actually read them and leave a goddamn comment for the poor authors.

OP specifically said they’re not interested in actually reading the fics, but wants to support their existence anyway, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s more than they’re required to do for fics they don’t want to read actually, and a very nice thing to do. Especially if they want to support a fic, but actually can’t read it because it contains triggers that could harm them by reading, but they know that’s not the author’s fault. You “comments are the only thing that counts” people never help convince anyone with a different point of view of what you believe by being so obnoxious. And sometimes even borderline entitled.

Is it nice to get comments? Yes. Is it better than kudos? That’s up to interpretation, but usually the answer is yes. Is it right to act like kudos aren’t good enough or are downright worthless, and shame people for giving kudos instead of comments? No.

So no, it doesn’t “mean nothing”. You’re just annoying.

There are some very salty people on this thread who seem to think that this kind of non-activism activism is something authors should be grovelling at their feet for. It's frankly pathetic, just as you are.

And you are just as pathetic as you think I am for accusing anyone of turning this into some kind of activism thing based on absolutely nothing, when it’s clearly just different opinions from different authors. You’re projecting very hard right now with your eagerness to pretend everything is activism or non-activism activism. And also pretty incoherent in your reaches and attempts to put words in people’s mouths.

In reality, there’s a lot of salty people in this thread trying to speak for all authors about how we should feel about the type of kudos OP gives out. I don’t speak for all authors either when I say I appreciate them still, but at least I’m aware that I don’t speak for the majority. That’s more than I can say about the others in this thread, including you.

I as an author don’t understand what you think I should be groveling at anybody’s feet for, just because I can appreciate different kinds of kudos. If I’m being salty, then I can’t imagine the sodium poisoning you’re going through right now.

AYRT Nobody is shaming people for leaving kudos if they've actually read the fic.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
The anon I was replying to said that OP should read the fic and then COMMENT on it, skipping kudos altogether. That’s where I was extrapolating the disregard for kudos in general from. Especially because this “comments over kudos” discussion has happened multiple times on F!S. There’s a strong contingent of shaming, or at least guilting those who leave kudos over comments here. But that’s not really relevant to today’s secret discussion, obviously. I was just bringing it up because the anon I was replying to sounds like these people.

Also, someone downthread specifically said “Yes it certainly makes me feel shittier about kudos than I ever did. Well done, OP.”. That’s directly implying a dislike of kudos in general. It does show that it’s not just kudos given without reading the fic that is being put down.

And it’s fine in and of itself to prefer comments over kudos. It’s valid for different people to have different preferences for which type of reader interaction they get. It’s when the writer openly judges or shames readers for only leaving kudos that gets on my nerves. I can’t stop anyone, and wouldn’t even if I could, from openly being that way to readers though, because it’s not my place to do that, and it’s their stories and audience.
