Makes me think of a secret a while back about giving Kudos to fics with controversial ships and kinks because they know the author would probably get hate. I do the same, for the same reason above or if I know it's a set of rare to find tropes and rarepairs, even if I'm not interested, for solidarity.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
That secret inspired me to do that even more than I already did. Perfectly fine use of a kudo, to say "not my thing, but shine on you crazy diamond."

I used to upvote for proper tags and warnings on sites that rarely bothered with them. Saved me a read for some stuff I wouldn’t have liked.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve done this too. I’ve also given kudos to fics that were sorta okay to me if the fics didn’t have a lot of kudos and/or if it’s the author’s first fic.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
You know what, this means nothing. If you really want to support those fics then actually read them and leave a goddamn comment for the poor authors.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
OP specifically said they’re not interested in actually reading the fics, but wants to support their existence anyway, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s more than they’re required to do for fics they don’t want to read actually, and a very nice thing to do. Especially if they want to support a fic, but actually can’t read it because it contains triggers that could harm them by reading, but they know that’s not the author’s fault. You “comments are the only thing that counts” people never help convince anyone with a different point of view of what you believe by being so obnoxious. And sometimes even borderline entitled.

Is it nice to get comments? Yes. Is it better than kudos? That’s up to interpretation, but usually the answer is yes. Is it right to act like kudos aren’t good enough or are downright worthless, and shame people for giving kudos instead of comments? No.

So no, it doesn’t “mean nothing”. You’re just annoying.

There are some very salty people on this thread who seem to think that this kind of non-activism activism is something authors should be grovelling at their feet for. It's frankly pathetic, just as you are.

AYRT Nobody is shaming people for leaving kudos if they've actually read the fic.

Personally I wish people wouldn't do this. The fact that some people do this just means I have to assume that like 25% of my kudos are meaningless.

I know you mean well, but wow I hate it.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ikr? Pity kudos or some self-congratulatory 'well done for existing' kudos is somehow worse than none.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I am not an author but I would prefer someone reading my fic and liking it and not some rando thinking how great they are for gifting me with their holy kudos.
Also as an artist now I am wondering how many pity likes I I get. This is so shitty.

It's "meaningless" that someone appreciates your fic even if it's not entirely their cup of tea? Wow.

Eh. Sometimes we want to be *seen*. To know that someone was paying attention to the way we turned a sentence or broke a plot point and actively enjoyed that.

A random lollipop... well, it's still a lollipop and that's nice. But it has no reflection on our skill, either.

Shrug. I enjoy every kudos I get, but I understand the person you were replying to.

As a writer, I treasure any comments and kudos I get! I get some of the other authors in this thread that think these “I’m glad this exists” kudos are meaningless, but I don’t agree at all. It’s not the same as a “I read this and enjoyed it” kudo, sure. But I still appreciate the thought of someone being glad my fic exists, even though they’re not interested in reading it! They didn’t have to do that, or interact with my fic at all, so I still feel like the kudos means something to me! :)

Co-signed. I write niche, rare stuff that gets no comment anyway and a couple of kudos top and I'll treasure every single kudos. Is it from someone who reads the language just well enough to get the gist of the fic but doesn't speak enough it to comment? from someone shy who loved it but can't articulate a comment? meaning "great!" or meaning "heh not that great but shine on you crazy diamond"? I don't know and I don't care, I got a little heart and the little heart means "I saw what you did and I'm glad it's there" and I'm happy with it.

Same!

I write for small fandoms and every kudos I get makes me really happy!

Also on board with this. I will not say that I don't like comments/reviews more than kudos (especially because I can interact and converse!) but in my dead fandom I'm really quite happy to see even HITS. If one of those hits also leaves kudos, then it makes my day.

This is how I feel, too. I'm just happy to have people reading my work, period. How they choose to express their support for it, be it in kudos/comments/bookmarks/favorites/whatever, is their call. Writers complain so much about how there isn't much engagement nowadays, and I think a lot of that is because it seems like readers can't please them no matter what they do. Kudos aren't enough, and if they comment, even if it's a positive comment, it's either too short or doesn't say enough about the fic, there's debate over whether or not constructive critique is acceptable, etc.

A preference in the kind of support one gets is one thing, but I dunno, I'd just think any positive support of any kind is worth appreciating. The more one complains about the kind of support they're getting, the harder it'll likely be for them to get any support at all after a time.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Bless you for doing that, OP. I don't trust hit counts, because I feel like a lot of hits are bots or just people clicking and going "ew, no" -- not a true indicator of popularity. But I trust the kudos a little more. I personally have left kudos if I start reading something and find that it's well-written/engaging/what-have-you, but then decide not to continue reading for whatever reason. That's kinder than me leaving a comment explaining why I don't want to read it (who wants comments like THAT? like, just go away if it's not your thing).

Besides, some people judge fics based on how many kudos they have -- they SORT them that way (kinda wish that wasn't an option, because it doesn't seem fair). So every kudos helps. And who doesn't love seeing that "you've got kudos!" email in the morning? Great way to start the day.

(Anonymous) 2021-12-31 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes me smile, OP. Although I write for myself and don't really mind that my fics are not popular or get a lot of views and comments every kudos I get means that someone saw and appreciated my work in some way and that makes my day a little bit better. :)

I do read the fics if I leave kudos.

But you said in the secret that you leave kudos to fics you aren’t personally interested in reading? So how does it mean you aren’t interested in reading them if you do read them?
