Or instead of waiting for that, you could just look for a fandom you actually enjoy? Like, I can't stand this grimdark stuff either but that's why I don't read it.

The comics are increasingly moving away from grimdark, so that is enjoyable. What isn't is the way the older fans act, like they seem to think the only right way to deal with some comics characters is moody and broody.

Obviously they're not old enough to remember the long, long stretches of time when this definitely wasnt the case yet lol

Every new generation kicks the older generation out so they can have their own thing, it is the way of things. It is time for Gen X and the older Mills to GTFO now.

You really think the current younger generation, puritanical as they are, would make lighthearted shit?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
lmao, right?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you’re saying re:puritanical younger generation. But why would they not make lighter stuff because they’re puritanical? Wouldn’t they be more inclined to make overly lighthearted stuff with no real conflicts so they wouldn’t “offend” anyone with dark or heavy subject matter?

In my observation, they seem to like angst as much as any other group, so they'd probably prefer stuff with a Clear Villain Doing Evil and Clear Victim Being Right And Sad, which can be just as dark as long as we Know the Villain Is Wrong And Bad

Possibly, but it would be so chock-full of bland black/white morality and soapboxing that it would end up a chore reading it. In which case I'd rather have grimdark.

But a lot of the people who want the grimdark thing to be over so we can have fun again ARE Gen X’ers and Millennials.

Should have thought about that before going down the grimdark rabbithole in the nineties.
