Maybe get symbols of your ships? Like if you ship Steve/Tony, add a stone for stony, or Thor/Steve, a shield and thunderbolt? Buffy/Spike could be Mr Stabby and a heart, etc. It's not cringe if it's too obscure to guess for the unitiated.
