Not having AO3's festering hellspawned morass of tags is a feature, not a bug. The best thing AO3 could do is just junk its current tag system. And nothing is trivial to do on AO3 unless you learn its weird search system.

NAYRT

AO3 has one of the most intuitive search functions of any fic archive. Unless you have the IQ of a glass of water of course.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No it doesn't. It is vague as hell and returns more false positives than even slightly relevant results. And it requires adding far too much extraneous information to do even that.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never had a single problem with it. I can only assume you're mashing your head against the keyboard or something to get that to happen.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear, you AO3 stans are worse than the Tesla stans.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, being grateful for a no charge, advert free pan-fandom archive with decent search functionality and no chance of another strikethrough is just plain madness, madness I tell you!

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if you AO3 stans would quit pissing all over other archives, I would.

And also if AO3 gave up its undermining of coyprights too.

??? I don't see anyone pissing on anything here except you.

'Undermining of copyright'? Wowkay.

Anon is a persistent troll on this subject. Or maybe just sincere but very persnickety.

Seems like a lot of effort for no real gain.

NAYRT--This is the bit I don't get. Ao3 explicitly prohibits the monetization of fanworks on the site so unless OP wants to ban fanfic from existing at all because fans playing in the sandbox of other peoples'/companies' IP makes them feel violated (Hi, Diana, you old Dr. Who character-stealing hypocrite, you!) idk what their beef is.

Especially as FF.net and Wattpad are also massive fanfic archives and Wattpad especially is fucking terrible at protecting writers' works.

I hope they're a troll because otherwise their hate-boner for Ao3 is taking up mental energy that could go toward creating original work.

Right? It's baffling.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah okay, you're a troll. Gotcha.

Not trolling, actually curious

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What other archives do you recommend?

Outside of two fandom pairing dedicated archives, the major ones I can think of are FF net and Wattpad. I think the youth quotev too? Where else? I know I'm missing out by not being on Tumblr but half the time those fics are just one shots anyway (I prefer long stories).

I'd be happy to check out other archives, I just know I have good chances of finding what I like on AO3. I've gotten in to Wattpad as well, although I shit on it, despite the...hit or miss quality of fic, it's not so bad and I like how each fic has a "cover".

(Anonymous) 2022-01-03 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it you. You’ll just take any opportunity to bitch and moan about AO3, won’t you? As well as continually show off how little you actually understand about copyright and transformative works.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT--what would/do you prefer instead of Ao3, then?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-03 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's the dumb copyright troll, so presumably it thinks no fanfic archives should exist, only licensed tie-ins.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

What are you actually asking for here? Yes, AO3 search finds false positive sometimes; it also is capable of finding more true positives than any other archive search I'm aware of. And if you just want a list of every story in a given fandom or with a given pairing, it's totally possible to just use it that way.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-02 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, so if you don't like AO3, don't use AO3 then. No one's making you.
