But regardless, I think there is a social good to watching very flawed people struggle (and yes, mostly fail) to be good people, to think about what would make them a good person. A lot of time trying to do this with considerably less flawed people does not cause the same type of reflexive "am I like that?" or "At least I'm better than that!" which is the most self-reflection a lot of people do.
Furthermore, I think you need to consider that quite a few people are straight up bad at relationships of both the friend and lover kind, and seeing someone they related to on TV felt like a relief.
