That said, I firmly believe that even if there were more men on the show, and these characters were less collaborators and more nuanced, they would be far more hated. Female characters who have negative qualities tend to spark less understanding in straight dramas.

I read the book but didn't watch too much of the show though my mom was in to it. So I've watched some and also gathered some info from her mentioning it a lot.
I also think it's possible to recognize that, yes, these are oppressed women but at the same time I don't think criticizing their horrid behavior is sexist, even when we understand perhaps where that behavior is coming from. It doesn't make them any less complicit or bad.
