The latter. I think most shippers, of any sort including wincest, were not actually watching SPN, at least so that you could tell in the ratings. Other CW shows are more free with shipper fodder.

This makes sense in the sense I've been in fandoms where canon ceased to be enjoyable for me but I still liked the characters enough to engage with fan content for it and even in some cases to create it myself. But I'm not sure if that's exactly what you're referring to.

Are there seriously people who are super into a ship for a series they've never watched, ever?

Yes that's what I mean. And yes there are! Sometimes the fic and the art just gets you but the media as a whole does not.

I guess I get that in a way, at times I'll read fic for a canon I'm not into because I come across some of the works that have story lines I find interesting or tropes and AUs I like and know enough about the characters through osmosis (if it's a popular enough fandom or one friends are into) to not be completely lost. But I've never created content for it or actively promoted is as something I'm into so I find it a bit strange in that way.

(Does put into perspective those people you come across where you ask yourself "did we watch the same show?" and the answer, as I now know, is probably no because they didn't watch at all.)

Absolutely, I've done that. Canon was a bit of a letdown as it turned out.
