Adore Spring Awakening, Next to Normal is engaging and I understand why other people swear by it, though I don't. Love Cabaret and Hair and everything about Nine. I have to be in the mood for Pippin (but mostly love Schwartz's other stuff) I like Passion and love Assassins and am intrigued by Pacific Overtures (which aren't necessarily classics, lol). Don't really like Falsettos. Do love Rent. There's a lot about Avenue Q that's compelling but I don't like it lol. I think The Color Purple really elevated the book. Love Newsies maybe better than the movie. Love Hadestown. Waitress for whatever reason doesn't interest me, and I think it's Sara Bareilles, in that I don't like her music in such a context. Love her music otherwise. There are too many teen musicals nowadays, not because they're for teens but because they're written from such a condescending perspective and unnecessarily simplified both musically and narratively.

I see! Spring Awakening (i think someone shared a YT link here) wrecked me -- intense, sad, and beautiful. A few you've listed I'd like to check out (I've only seen the movie for Hair, and in that note I love Jesus Christ Superstar, and I've enjoyed some songs off of Godspell). Newsies was fantastic and I didn't have the chance to see The Color Purple. I enjoyed Hadestown (on that note, not a musical as such, but I really recommend watching Black Orpheus, if you've never seen it). I was never into waitress or Sarah B. (Although I recently listened to when he sees me and fell in love the emotion if the song).

I definitely can see that. Especially when we're looking at major Broadway musicals -- they've got to draw in the largest swathe of people they can find. That said, I don't think they need dumb it down for people and there are perfectly good stories being told all over. I'd like to expand my palate and see more off Broadway stuff (I think the last thing I saw was Burn This (not a musical)) and every time I okay Raul Esparza's take on Being Alive (from Company) I wish I could have seen the whole thing live/that cast (the song always breaks me too lol). I also really enjoyed the songs from the Band's Visit. That spoke of longing and waiting.

Anyway! I'm always happy to hear of new things to listen to, if you every have more to share and what you like about them!
