I was told by my own mother that it's better to marry than to burn in Hell alone. She isn't even a religious person, she just told me that because "you know, that's what they say, I dunno. It's not good for a woman to not have a husband to take care of her." *major eyeroll* Why? So I can be an unhappy housewife like you and the rest of them?

Why would anyone else want someone to "take care of" them anyway?

ayrt
I'd actually prefer it at this point in time if I could get the type of man I wanted. But I can't. So I'd rather be alone and glad.

“I’ll take care of you… in Hell”

Good wedding vows or best wedding vows?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't everybody want that? Sometimes?

Without the whole misogyny and burning in Hell part, I mean.

Agreed.

I didn't date or seek out life partners until I was 30, and wanting other peoole to care for (and to take care of me, when I end up needing it) was the main motivator to get my ass moving on that. World's scary, man.

sometimes, sure, but when it's in a "husband taking care of a wife" context it almost always involves infantilizing the woman. my grandmother used to work at a bank and she said they were always getting older women whose husbands had died coming in asking for help writing checks/managing the bank account because their husbands had always done all of that for them so they'd never learned how to do anything by themselves.

Humans are very historically, maybe even instinctually, social creatures.

Considering how so often it's actually the wives having to take care of their husbands...

So does she think that being single is a Hell worthy offense? Because that’s a new one on me. Or does she think everyone is automatically going to Hell no matter what, and that’s why it’s supposedly better to not be alone there? Either way, very weird ideology, and I’m sorry you have to put up with it.

I wonder why the assumption that a couple gets to stay together in hell. If not being alone makes hell better, then wouldn't everyone get split up and kept apart because, you know, hell?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-14 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don’t really get why anon’s mother assumes that either, because I’ve never heard of couples staying together in hell being a thing. And good point, anything that makes you feel better would be counterproductive to the whole Hell thing, and probably wouldn’t be allowed.
