I think I'm going to buy a cheap-ass mattress and a 3" memory foam topper and hope that works out a little better

It probably will. I wanted a firm mattress with a squishy top layer after sleeping on a bed like that at a hotel. I forgot to check what kind of mattress it was, though, and I couldn't find anything like it for sale in one piece/set. In the end I bought a random extra firm mattress and then got a memory foam topper at Target and it is wonderful!
