121. Maybe it would help if you understood the fact that astrology is utter crap, and the most basic astronomy and physics utterly disprove that it could ever work? Bad Astronomy. (http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/astrology.html) Read it. Know it. Don't look like an utter idiot.

136. "No, seriously, it's SPN fandom. They'd kill me."

I lol'd.

151. Wow, I think you just convinced me to finally see this movie.

121. I've read that site, and I honestly don't think it's a good source for disproving astrology. Most of what the author of the page is talking about has a lot to do with horoscopes and predictions, which most astrologists dismiss out of hand.

I'm not saying you're wrong about astrology. I honestly don't know one way or another. But you might want find a better site to source on this topic.

Also, if you want to prove a point to someone, you might not want to call them idiots. It's not very persuasive.

It's one of the best sources on the web, actually. If that doesn't satisfy you, it's been published as a book. Should be in your local library. The author of the website (and the book) has a Ph.D in astronomy. I cannot possibly see how you could consider this a dubious source.

And I'm not sure what you're saying astrology is about, if not predictions. Whether you're talking about 3-sentence daily horoscopes or detailed natal charts, both are predictions.

And what Philip Plait talks about applies to all of it.

And please note, I said, "don't look like an utter idiot." Someone only IS an idiot if they've read the science and refuse to acknowledge that astrology is fundamentally flawed. And in that case, it's quite willful stupidity.

If you look at astrology from the perspective of physical science it doesn't really hold up, I'll give you that. I'm already familiar with the Barnum effect and I've even read some of the studies mentioned in that article you linked to.
If you look at astrology through a social scientific perspective however it doesn't seem as ridiculous. I'm talking about social psychology and theories of identity formation, particularly Cooley's looking glass self theory. If you think about how much a part of our culture sun sign stereotypes are, it's very probable people are getting signals about how their signs behave every time they read about their horoscope in a magazine or talk to others who are familiar with their sign. For example, I am an Aries, and every time I read something that says Aries are supposed to be independent and confident, it's going to eventually sink in that I'm supposed to act confident, even tho I might be a rather shy individual. Subtly I begin to alter my behavior based on what's expected of me as an Aries. The theory I think was originally intended to address the perpetuation of racial stereotypes, but I think it applies to astrological stereotypes as well.
I don't think people give enough credit to astrology as a social phenomenon, so they simply dismiss it as being 'idiotic', as you just have.

Sorry for the long winded response, I've thought about this a lot tho, trying to get over my signist issues.

Okay, then I'm glad we're on the same page re: physical science.

Regarding social psychology/identity formation - yes, I do see the point you're making here. That's been brought up to me before, and I won't/can't dismiss that when I know nothing about it. It could well be that just knowing your sign influences whether or not you act like your sign. I'm supposedly a Virgo, and I do, in fact, fit my sign fairly well. I am, for example, quite critical. Er, case in point.

But this is exactly what I find funny about astrology. Like, I can accept the idea that simply knowing I "am" a Virgo (and I knew that, and a decent amount about my sign, from quite a young age) shaped my personality enough that I "look" more like a Virgo than I otherwise would have.

But (if I recall this correctly), the sun was actually in Leo when I was born. If astrology "worked" in that sense, I should act more like a Leo.

So if astrology "works," it doesn't have anything to do with celestial bodies.

(I realise this is basically what you said. I'm just sort of elaborating where I agree.)

Regarding dismissing it as idiotic - well, see my comment above.
