Inspired by 5 - what was the monkey's paw moment in your fandom?

For Star Wars, either Prequels or Sequels, take your pick. The Star Wars fandom has always been pretty awful and pretty terrible at understanding what opinion is and that people can have different ones. And also terrible about thinking they are owed exactly what they want.

Doctor Who- New Who and then the female Doctor

Tolkien fandom- I wasn't there at the time, but I'm guessing probably when the movies first came out?

Don't fret, you'll get the full experience and more once that Prime series comes out re:Tolkien fandom.

re: Star Wars GOD ain't that the truth

I feel like Lucas in about 1998 had no idea what was coming. He was giving his loyal fans what they wanted - his ideas for what happened before Ep. 4! He had no idea that they had already built up something in their heads that he could never live up to.

By the sequels, and esp Manda/Fett now, they couldn't use that excuse. They basically knew that no matter what they did, fandom would love it for about a week and then hate it.

I was there when the LotR movies came out and it didn't seem bad/people acting monkey-pawed?

There were plenty of book fans who didn't like the movies but they didn't seem to be involved in any of the parts of online fandom I was in. They just kind of got steamrolled over by people who loved the movies (which, remember, were crazy popular) and faded away.

Maybe there was a monkey's paw feeling about the Hobbit movies but I wasn't in the fandom anymore by that time.

And also terrible about thinking they are owed exactly what they want.

This is Star Wars biggest issue at the moment, and MCU fandom's as well.

The involvement of JJ Abrams. Yeah, I know, that doesn't narrow it down much. What is the opposite of the Midas touch? He has that.

Both for Star Trek AND Star Wars, which is quite impressive.

Somebody mentioned this in the thread above - any and all attempts to make live action Terry Pratchett, but especially the newest one that shall not be named.

Also, all of the books post- Night Watch (Sorry, PTerry.)

Oh, let me think back here... the ones I remember are mostly shipping related. Probably spoilers for lots of fandoms, but none super recent?

Jack/Ianto actually being a couple - we all know what happened then.

I don't go there anymore but Castiel's "I love you" to Dean (luckily I'm at the point where I can have fun with the memes, but maaaan if I'd still been a fan.)

I actually shipped Bruce/Natasha after the first Avengers movie... yeah.

Eliot/Quentin actually getting taken semi-serious as a ship on The Magicians.

I wanted Sansa to become Queen in the North so badly, but ended up really disliking her before it happened and thus couldn't enjoy it anymore.

Man, the final seasons of GoT made me love Sansa. I wish she had taken an even darker turn.

Man, Cas telling Dean he loved him gave me all the feels and I was so sure the last episode would involve Sam and Dean getting Cas out of the Empty. Instead we got a shit ending. At least I can laugh about it now and enjoy the memes.

For MCU, Infinity War and Avengers Endgame.

Re: Inspired by 5 - what was the monkey's paw moment in your fandom?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-24 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, in order for it to be a monkey's paw moment, it has to be something that was actually wanted. Infinity War and Endgame were even less wanted than Civil War.

Sailor Moon Crystal. A faithful adaptation of the manga? Yes, please! Oh, but it's gonna have wonky animation, a random subplot involving the Senshi and Shitennou, and you're gonna tone down the violence even though this is aimed at an older audience who's nostalgic for Sailor Moon? No, no thank you.

Well, last season of GOT.

season 4? 5? of Arrow. When they introduced the shitton of other people on the team that werent the original 3 / the Producer changed to a woman which was nice bc the others were assholes, but she didnt do any better in the long run. :/

Not exactly something I wanted, but a lot of people want podcast adaptations. I am really angry at Archive 81 adaptaion

(Anonymous) 2022-01-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I posted this above, but I'm staring down the barrel of one right now.

"I get that. Namor has been cast in the MCU. On the one hand: Yay! My man will get a higher profile! On the other hand: Boo! Every MCU version of Marvel characters has been inferior and it will permanently effect the fanfiction/fan art ecosystem.

Like yes, I've been wanting this for a while but now that it's happening I kind of wish it wasn't. [removed]"

I don't know, maybe they'll be so wildly different that the MCU won't influence the 616. Like with Aquaman.

Monkey's paw

(Anonymous) 2022-01-23 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I just can't post properly today, apologies.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-24 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think the MCU characters are inferior, but they are different, and far too many fans do not seem to understand that the movies and the comics are entirely different continuities. Unfortunately, Marvel/Disney also seem determined to bring the comics into line with the movies, and that makes makes me sad, especially now that they're following the worst of the comics material rather than the best.

Well, I can at least focus on completing the runs I loved in the comics franchises that I loved.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-24 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'll exclude the MCU/films fandom tags on A03 and read fic and it'll say it'll use tons of comic book plot points but have MCU dynamics. I'm bitter.

"especially now that they're following the worst of the comics material rather than the best" - I'd LOVE to hear more of your thoughts on this point. I thought we hit rock bottom with Civil War because that comic isn't actually good it's just *Important* and *Status Quo Changing* but most of the other recent stories I can identify were well received. Ok, the one story I can identify.
