DA That's such a strange statement to me. If two characters are visually similar they can't have different stories?

Two characters who are visually similar can have different stories. But I don't think Boba Fett has ever really been a deep character with a compelling and rich internal life. A huge amount of Boba Fett's character and appeal, from his first appearance, has come from the fact that he wears cool armor and has a cool ship. And as I understand it, the lead character in The Mandalorian is - like Fett - a bounty hunter, so there's a significant overlap in their rules as well.

I'm not making a general universal statement that two characters who are visually similar can never have different stories, I just think that there's going to be significant overlap in television series about Boba Fett and The Mandalorian.

I mean, leaving aside the discussion on Boba himself, like the person above me said, you can definitely make the same argument about Jedi as Mandalorians. The appeal comes from the fact that they have magic powers and laser swords. Surely one Jedi is interchangeable in terms of appeal with any other. Yet we have a LOT of Jedi characters in the franchise, and everyone's fine with that.

Boba as a character is arguable, not gonna argue there. I'd say the prequels added a lot more into his character with his father and connection to the clones, but he's not the most fleshed out character in the world on a personal level.

But there is a bit of a difference in story between, essentially, an ex-assassin who got murked and came back from the dead to take over the crime syndicate that lead to his death (Boba), and a lone, honour-obsessed religious gunslinger who found and adopted a war orphan and goes on the run to keep them safe, accidentally becoming a king in the process (Din).

There's gonna be overlap, yeah, since they've shared several plots on Din's show, and relatively similar positions in the universe. But they're not the same story.

I don't think - maybe there's someone I'm not thinking of - I don't think there's any characters whose appeal is just that they're a Jedi. Usually individual Jedi seem to be pretty variegated and have their own things going on that make them distinctive as individual characters. I don't think that's the case with Boba Fett, specifically - I think Boba Fett's appeal really is very closely bound up with his armor and his aesthetic. If you already have a series about a character with Mandalorian armor, what does a Boba Fett series bring to the table? And I'm sure that there's stuff that you can do to differentiate the shows, but on the other hand, you wouldn't have to worry about the problem in the first place by just doing a different Star Wars show.

Initially Din's appeal might have been the outfit but that is not how it ended up being. Hell, him being a bounty hunter isn't even that important in season 2.

I have no idea why you keep reducing them to just their armor. They are two wildly different characters.

I'll grant that Din Djarin may have more character, I'm not familiar enough to say, but I definitely think the armor is a huge part of the character for Fett, so that's why I've been reducing him to his armor.

And you know what really threw me in episode 5? That big hulking mandolorian also had a dent in his helmet like Fett.

If you already have a series about a character with Mandalorian armor, what does a Boba Fett series bring to the table?

To sell more crap to kids and nerds, which is the point of all Disney entertainment.

I mean, The Bad Batch is literally about a pack of clones and they're all varied. Hell, even 'normal' clones from Clone Wars had individuality. It was a whole subplot and character arc.

Having said that, Goddamn is Book of Boba Fett boring as shit.

I think that"s the point, yo. Mandalorian was super popular so they're milking that for all it's worth. It's like saying it's weird they made a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff that also had Watchers and Vampires in it.

But spinoffs usually do go out of their way to differentiate the new show from the source material? It's not like the Buffy spinoff was about another peppy blonde vampire slayer. IDK.

If it helps, think of it like CSI, like CSI: New York and CSI: Miami have the same basic set-up, but different characters (with the same general professions) and different situations (even if some are only slightly different).

But those are all formula procedurals. They're not fundamentally about or driven by the central characters, they're about the drama of solving a mystery within a given format and structure, with the characters then operating within that structure.

I don't think that's a great comparison for shows like The Mandalorian and Boba Fett which - so far as I understand - aren't procedurals and are strongly driven by the central characters, are at least are intended to be.

It isn't meant to be a one-to-one analogy, just that similar shows can have lot of overlap in the kinds of stories told and even character archetypes and still find an audience.

Only if you don't consider that until recently there was a LOT of additional stories featuring Boba Fett and his compelling and rich internal life in Legends? There are plenty of books and comics about Boba Fett, which fans of the character didn't magically forget when Disney decanonized them.
