I'm so tired of the self-flagellation in fandom these days. * You're not doing anything wrong FFS.

It is hard, though, when you grow up in an environment where you are taught that sex is bad and wanting sex is wrong and that what media you consume should be always wholesome and nice. Even when you grow up and learn that this isn't true and no longer buy into that view, it is still drilled into you so much it is tattooed on your psyche. It is hard to shake.

Catholic guilt, right?

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-01-28 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in my case more like Protestant fundamentalism guilt. But same basic principle.

I get it. I was raised very Catholic and even though I realised I was an atheist at 13, I still have some kind of internalised Catholic guilt.

Protestant fundamentalism sounds even more fun!

Not so much. I still do believe in God, but I don't identify myself with any particular group right now as they're all pretty awful.

OP

Less guilt, more shame lol

And it's more the idea of it being traced back to me and misusing my skill (if you can call it that) that kinda bothers me (but the latter end is a different can of worms altogether). I should be clear that been none of my fandom accounts are affiliated to my RL name etc. But still.

NAYRT

but i get it. fanfiction AT ALL is still widely seen as kinda weird, smutty fanfic even more so. if one of my employers somehow found one of my aliases i think i would just expire on the spot.

AYRT of the AYRT

I totally get that. I would hate that too. I was more referring to the part where you say you hate that you're 'one of those people '. OP, there's nothing wrong with it. You're fine. Stop beating yourself up for enjoying smut in private.

OP

Aw, thanks nonnie! Maybe the way I phrased it come out more "I'm beating myself up over this" and less "when people talk about fandom and specifically fanfiction, they assume it's full of thirsty people reading smut" -- that is, I'm one of those people proving the stereotype correct, not writing or reading gen, meta, etc. Etc.

I guess the root of that is in some way "oh no! That's bad! You shouldn't!"; I just feel like I'm adding to the stereotype, and it's annoying, because you have all sorts of people reading and writing different kinds of fic. I don't fanfiction to be painted with a broad brush; I'm definitely checking off some of the boxes for the "type" that consumes fic...But, what can you do? Lol

Think of it this way, though: the reason we have smut in fan fiction is because no one is willing to offer us decent, interwoven, sincere and hot smut in regular (published) media. Noooo everything in media must be neutered! Because wrong sex bad! But violence good!

Eh. Screw em and enjoy your smut, just like you should enjoy everything else about fan fiction that is progressive and good.

I no longer write, but I used tow hen I was a teacher (for years), and no one found anything. Tbh, most likely, no one even looked. You may be exaggerating the danger a bit?

Chiming in to say that religious upbringings can play a part in it but also even a lot of secular thought can at times ingrain the idea that adding sex or focusing on sex in such a context has a gratuitous vapidity. To put it one way. It can make you a bit self-conscious. (For the record, I think a lot of secular people who explain why depicting sex or having it a focus having Few Good Reasons For is a carry over from religious upbringings for many people. They no longer buy into a lot of the tenets but the ingrained feelings don't leave so easily and they're finding new ways to justify them.)

I'd say go for it OP. I enjoy a lot of sexual stuff in my content. Both from a creating perspective and as a person enjoying a creation. Sex is very human and can be an important aspect of some people's relationships. There's nothing wrong with having an interest in it in any capacity. If we didn't the human race would've died out long before now.

I totally agree, especially for women because sexual desire is more normalized for men. Most of the time, the sexual desire of women is portrayed as being about men and being attractive to them and turning men on, the focus is still on the men. Women having their own desires and needs isn't talked about as much, and sexual desire is seen as more dangerous, dirty, wrong when it is a woman's desire.
