Make a new email account, pick a new username, post smut, never talk about it outside fandom with your real social media accts, then profit!

How would your potential students or unborn kids know your smut fic username?

I guess I can go ahead and do that, I just feel like I already have a thousand accounts lol.

But I can make a completely distinct account to strictly post from (the one I was originally going to use I've used to comment on other fics, which...I can still technically use...)

I'm so tired of the self-flagellation in fandom these days. * You're not doing anything wrong FFS.

It is hard, though, when you grow up in an environment where you are taught that sex is bad and wanting sex is wrong and that what media you consume should be always wholesome and nice. Even when you grow up and learn that this isn't true and no longer buy into that view, it is still drilled into you so much it is tattooed on your psyche. It is hard to shake.

Just keep everything under an anonymous screen name so no one knows it's you? (People still do that, right?)

Or are you horrified just at the idea of a child or student of yours reading your smut, even if they don't know you wrote it and you don't know they read it?

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you’re using your real name to post porn under how would anyone know? I use completely different usernames for my fic-account and twitter so no one can easily link them together just because I like to have my smutty side of fandom separated from the PG version. I don’t want people to know my kinks lmao.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I have three AO3 accounts:

- the goodfic (some of it's smut, but it's all my best work)
- the shameless, iddy fluff
- the shameless, iddy kinky porn that I'm slightly embarrassed about because I don't want my fandom friends to know what my iddy kinky porn is like

Pssst… hey

don’t know if you know this but

pretty much everyone consumes porn in some way. You’re actually in the minority if you don’t.

I relate OP! I want to post horny fanart somewhere but I'm very scared it'll be linked back to me by style alone and I'll lose every possible future art job. The only solution I can think about is to post them somewhere very fandom obscure.

OP

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah!!! Exactly!

Unless you have a super distinctive voice when writing, it's far less evident than when using drawings/paintings etc.

If it makes you feel any better, I started learning how to animate from an animated porn blog (lol they did some really good animation work! Outside of the vulgarity, it was super seamless and I liked the style). When I went back for tutorials, I saw they had cleaned up the porn portion of their blog, which led me to believe they were either trying to get a job or get into school/a program and we're using the Tumblr as part of the portfolio. But I get you!

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Just don't link your fanworks to your RL identity in any obvious ways and you're fine.

Also, if I was a teacher and wrote porn anonymously and my students read it, I would not care, as long as they didn't know I wrote it. I would prefer to also not know they read it, but if somehow I accidentally found out they read it, I would say nothing and then chuckle about it later in private. *shrug* Most people over the age of puberty enjoy some form of porn. It's not weird unless you make it weird.

Are you going to be posting it under your real name or something? Just pick a handle nobody would link to you, don't tell anyone else about it, and post away.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
If you really are paranoic that someone will find you on a moslty anonymous archive you can use a false temporary email account (like guerrilla mail) to sign up on AO3 and use a VPN when you post your fics or interact with the site while logged in.
Kind of extreme, but you'll be 99.9% sure that nobody will ever link your fics to you. But almost surely nobody will never ever try to doxx you just for posting smut.
Enjoy writing and posting porn with no shame.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you ever do become a teacher or have kids... simply delete your smut. They can't read it then.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I think AO3 makes it easy to post smut in a way in which it can't be traced back to you. You can post anon, or (as others upthread have suggested) create a new account that's unaffiliated from your main social media account(s).

I started writing smut in earnest and posting them online last year and it's been really liberating and fun! I post for a small fandom and I'm not doing much to "build" an audience. I thank people who leave comments but that's about it. I let myself enjoy the Hits and Kudos I receive, even if they're not a lot.

If it's literally the idea that one day someone close to you may read your filth, that's fine! No pressure to post smut! But if you have the desire to post your works, I'd say take the leap and post them!

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Can't you orphan fics on AO3 too?

I mentioned up thread my AO3 accounts, and maybe I'll just make a whole new email/account (unrelated to the last two accounts and my DW account, or maybe use the DW account since I've only interacted with one person?/wanted to use as a master rec list archive)...I don't know if I'd ever orphan or anon them...but it's an option!

I'm glad that writing and posting your smut has helped you feel liberated! I also want to have some fun! It's been so long since I've posted ANYTHING... I'm just afraid writing anything fanfic related might zap any regular writing (which it's been a while) feelings so...sigh. anyway! Keep posting -- honestly what you're describing is kind of what I'm looking to do, just post, thank whoever enjoyed it, and keep interaction minimal. Audience building isn't required, but it's nice to know people enjoy what you put out!

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
we get how many "free invites" for joining AO3 that most people will never use? use different emails to give out all those invites to alternate screen names, post smut, proft. it's what I did.

or just live your best life and give no fucks about what other peopel think. as long as your rl info isn't connect, who the fuck gives a shit?

Thank you secretmaker!

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
For making my secret! Great image choice :)

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
the majority of other replies to this make me kinda uncomfortable. doxxing is some common these days, and i've seen it happen to multiple smut creators simply because they create smut, so i think this is a pretty reasonable concern.

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I'm curious though, has that ever happened to someone who only wrote on AO3 and had no other social media presence???

(Anonymous) 2022-01-28 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
If you just have an AO3 account with no links to other social media accounts and no identifying information, is there any way you can be doxxed?

This is going to sound like I'm an ancient, lol, but when I got into online fandom about 20 years ago, it was standard practise to have a separate email for your wallet name and for your fandom identity.
