For people who don’t like the song in English, I highly recommend it in Spanish. I just love it so much, but that might also be because I relate a lot to Mirabel.

Regarding her name, I thought Mirabel and Maribel were two different names, not a variation of the same name? I have to admit that her name sounded a little funny to me when I first watched the movie. I saw it in Spanish and thought, “Huh? Isn’t it supposed to be Maribel?”, but I’m used to it now and really like her name.

They are two different names, like Coraline and Caroline.

Agreed. It's not like Catherine and Katherine where it *is* just a spelling difference. I would pronounce Mirabel and Maribel differently.

Same OP! I cried during her song, idk it really touch something with me. Second favorite is Surface Pressure.

Regarding her name, Mirabel is a different name with a different origin (it is a Latin name that means wonderous/of wonderous beauty), but according to the creators it was chosen due to part of it being "mira", which is a conjugated form of "to look" in Spanish (The original word is mirar. So, "Ella mira" would mean, very very basically, "she looks").

Her song was the point where I was like "ooh, this is going to be a tearjerker." I also very much like its reprieve at the end. The "You don't shine you burn" to me creates a double connotation of "burning out" and the way they keep pushing and pushing themselves over the limit and of the power of the star. And then they sing "we see how bright you burn" right back at her.

I very much like it, but I think a lot of people are influenced by the shifting that's in Bruno's song and relate to the themes in Isabella and Luisa's (which, I'm the last two. I can't listen to Luisa's in public because as catchy as it is, what hits me too hard is the lyrics. I'd probably cry in public).

However, in terms of visuals, I vastly prefer Mirabel's. I love the bright lights of the first one and then the more grounded part of the reprieve.

That moment when the hand claps come into the background is everything.

I read somewhere that when the synopsis for the movie came out, most of the Spanish-speaking internet tried to "inform" Disney that they had misspelled Mirabel's name, because Maribel is so much more common (the Coraline/Caroline comparison is exceptionally apt).

It is kind of on the nose to name the one child who gets no magical wonder "wonder", but I like to headcanon that Bruno suggested her name out of some strong premonitory feeling.

As part of the Spanish speaking at home/English online, I too was a bit confused with Mirabel, as Maribel is super common, and I (personally) haven't met any Mirabels, but Maribels aplenty.

Her song hit me too, both the familia Midrifal and the one where she's in the courtyard. Like damn that hit more than I expected lol.

The second song she sings when everyone is taking the family photo without her is the one that got me (I don’t remember enough about the movie to know which is which, sorry.)

I feel like I’ve always been over looked in my family. My father has schizophrenia and my mum is borderline - so, super dramatic and prone to making major mistakes. On top of that my sister was the golden child who got to leave home and meet a partner and have a child long whilst I stayed at home and became our mother’s carer. I’ve always felt like I’m not special - not good enough to be valued and not fucked up enough to be coddled. Even now when I’ve been able to gain my independence, I been majorly depressed because I feel like I’m still at 18 just starting out in the world whilst everyone my age seems to be accurately in their 30s with partners and kids. To make it worse, outside of my counsellor, I have a hard time just getting someone to sit down and just listen to my actual feelings about my life and where my heart is. There’s a lot of “I’m OK, I feel fine” when it’s really “Im not OK, I’m not fine and I’m in a really, really, really bad place and not only will no one listen to me, I’m not important enough to be heard.”

I'm sorry nonny :(
I think it's brave you went out in the world while not having gotten much support.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-03 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
DA
Nonny :((( I feel you. That song gutted me to the core. I have the same feeling of being expendable and just plain useless to my family. I'm 30+ with no children and no intention to find a partner (also Gay in a homophobic family LMAO) while my sisters are both married and one has a child that everyone loves to bits.
You are not alone. There are a tons of people feeling like us. I hope you find your tribe and thrive. I'm working on it, too.

AYRT

That's the song!

Also, I'm send you a hug nonnie;I hope you're able to find people who appreciate you and really truly see you and your value as a person just for being(not even based on what you do). I know you'll find them <3

my first connotation on mirabels name was a plum variation (mirabelle plum)
malurette: (croissant)

Same. Thought it was cute, until the second thought came that, no, the plum and her name come from the same place--latin mirabilis--without her name coming from the plum, and it was not just cute but beautiful.

Maribel is my name, so it does mess me up watching Encanto a little, even though Mirabel’s name is different than mine lol. Because they can sound similar enough to through me off if I’m not paying attention. Especially considering I so rarely hear my name in any media except the rare telenovela(and I don’t really like or watch those, or any kind of soap opera-type stories). But Maribel and Mirabel are two different names, as others have already pointed out.

I totally agree about adoring Mirabel’s song though! I loved the whole soundtrack, but that’s one of the only two that made me tear up or straight up cry when I heard it for the first time. The other being Do Oruguitas, of course(along with it’s English version during the credits, but I’m counting them as one song).

I don't understand the confusion about Mirabel's name not being Maribel. It's normal throughout all media, especially if it has fantasy elements, for main characters to have special snowflake names you rarely meet anyone with. Like a few other anons mentioned, was anyone confused about why Coraline wasn't Caroline? And Coraline isn't even a real name, while Mirabel, though uncommon, is.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-03 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Actually Coraline *is* a real name, French, and the last syllable should be pronounced 'leen'.

Er. That's my fact for the day.
