Not a fan but I always assumed her name was short for Virginia so I also went with soft G.

While reading ASOIAF I pronounced Gilly's name Jilly in my head so I feel you.

I can only assume that you've been pronouncing 'gin' with a hard g. Please keep doing so, that's awesome.

Are you saying Guinea as in Guinea pig? I can't think of any other way it could be pronounced.

I was mentally pronouncing it with a "g" like "get" or "great" but then in the movies they pronounced it "jinny" so oops. Unless you're pronouncing gin wrong then you are pronouncing Ginny right.

How is this a problem? Clips from the movies are right here on the internet for you to check if you're not sure.

Is this because of that whole Ginny versus Jenny thing in another post? That's just a local accent thing, I believe. Like, my name is Wendy, but when some people say it, it sounds like Windy. I think of it as a US Pacific Northwest accent.

...huh? In the audiobooks and films they say it with a soft G. A hard G in that position would sound really weird. (Remember it's short for Ginevra, although I think before that was revealed a popular fan theory was Virginia.)

That said, I pronounced Hermione "HER-me-own" until I actually heard it out loud in the film. I had no idea as I had not, to my recollection, encountered the name before. derp.
