Re: Fandom (mis)pronunciations

Final Fantasy has a lot of things that are mispronounced FOR A REASON.

Like how the alleged actual pronunciation for Tidus in FFX was so weird that apparently no one ever in English-speaking fandom says it correctly. And Quistis and Yuffie make sense, but are not what most of us thought until... I think Yuffie's name was spoken aloud in Kingdom Hearts voice acting or something and we all went "wait what"

I tried to pronounce Cait Sith correctly when I was working on the cosplay, but everyone who asked what I would be cosplaying later at the convention kept going "Who?" so I gave up and just call him "Kate Sith" like everyone else. :/

None of these mispronunciations actually bother me because at this point it's as good as canon for the English fandom, hahah.

I am moderately humiliated by my years-long mispronunciation of Camus in Suikoden though. Even though that's another one most people mess up unless they're into philosophy, which I am not. I still feel awkward saying it the right way BUT DARNIT I'M TRYING.

Wait, how is Camus supposed to be pronounced? It's not the way it looks?

(to be fair Suikoden has a lot of confusing names and since no one had voices until V...or was it IV? I only remember voices in V...well, no one was saying names aloud)

My ex instantly fell hard for Miklotov while we were playing through, and she started talking about the two of us potentially doing some RP scenes with him and "Ka-moo". And I was like "who?" And she was assuming his name was supposed to be pronounced like the French author/philosopher. Whose name I'd never heard spoken aloud, so I wouldn't have known that was how HIS name was pronounced either.

So she looked up the katakana and confirmed that yeah, it's Ka-moo. I'm kind of shocked, given the overall quality of the first couple games' localizations, that they managed to figure out what was going on there.

...Actually using my Suikoden icon reminds me also... I am intentionally continuing to mispronounce Leknaat just because the official pronunciation is so incredibly ugly.

Yeah, I saw "Kamiyu" listed as the Japanese name for both Camus (S2) and Camille (S1) so just assumed it was Camus like Albert Camus.

I've gotten used to Lek-not, but I still tilt my head in confusion at "George" Prime (as much as I dig the character).

Hahah, yes, George Prime. If I remember right, that's what everyone initially thought it was, then took a second look and realized it wasn't, and then they called him that after all in V? (He is enough of a badass he can call himself anything he wants, but okay man! :D)

OH MY GOOOODDD I have been so wrong all this time. Thank you for enlightening me. You're right though, when in doubt go to the katakana, that was how I was sure I was always pronouncing Geddoe right.

Leknaat is just weird anyway, we'll go with that. Shit, now I'm remembering having to explain to a cosplay contest emcee how to pronounce Arshtat and Ferid....

...And now I need to go look up Arshtat and Ferid because I thought I had them right. Voice acting, after all...? But I remember my ex and I also once considered cosplaying them, and when discussing it somewhere online one of our friends jumped in and was like "Your fandom has a character named Arsehat?" And ... we never quite got over that. :D

(Agh, this conversation is making me remember I need to play V again - those two and what happened with them and Georg basically not only pushed every button I have but jumped up and down on them repeatedly.)

Wait, how is Camus supposed to be pronounced?

Like an exploding cow. Ka-moo.

I can't stop laughing.
Good one.

I refuse to call him Tee-dus

It's not even Tee-dus! That at least I could deal with. But Tee-dah? Noooope. Not going there and neither is anyone else I know, including the dude who has that as his "first name" on Facebook because he cosplays him so much.

Is it not Tie-dus (sounds like Titus but with a soft 't' that sounds like a 'd' for the second 't'?)
pantswarrior: Laguna scratches his head. (huh?)

Re: Fandom (mis)pronunciations

Katakana suggests Tee-dah.

If they'd spelled his name Tida I would be totally down with that. But I cannot reconcile "Tidus = Tee-dah" in my brain.

everybody in the world thinks it's tide-us (thematically the elemental match-up of tied-us with the watery associations of blitzball are EXACTLY the sort of thing ff loves), but woff canonised tee-dus

I was reading Questionable Content for a long while before I realized how 'Hannelore' was meant to be pronounced - I'd never heard of the name before QC, nor have I encountered another Hannelore outside of Hanners, so I parsed it as being of Greek derivation, and pronounced it Han e lorry.

Turns out it's German. Oops.
