Fandom (mis)pronunciations

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2022-02-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What fandom names or terms did/do you mispronounce?

Which mispronunciations in your fandoms bug you the most?

Despite watching the show (granted second screening it), I still don't know how to pronounce Geralt and Jaskier.

A lot of the Chinese names from webnovels and in Genshin Impact but I tried my hardest to change it.

And one example of a mispronounciation I absolutely loathe (not my fandom but in general) was back when the Ghibli adaptation of Howl's Moving Castle came out. In my country's dub (which was the only version you could watch in cinema here at the time) they went out of their way to pronounce Howl as Hauro (Hah-uh-ro) in some sort of weird, nonsensical faux-Japanese way. Which is so much worse than people in fandom doing it wrong because the people creating the dub where getting fucking PAID for it and yet neither bothered to do even the slightest bit of research or use some common sense and bloody hell it still makes me mad.

I've been angry at Chinese mispronunciation for a long time, because of Dynasty Warriors and some terrible, terrible, awful, very bad names. No, it's not Cow Pee. That the official english translation that the dub actors used.

Now I only play Koei games in the original language, which is still hilariously wrong but because of Japanese reading of the same kanji vs english mangling. DW9 finally had an actual Chinese script with proper voicing so I could finally hear so many names spoken correctly for the first time, it's breathtaking.

Final Fantasy has a lot of things that are mispronounced FOR A REASON.

Like how the alleged actual pronunciation for Tidus in FFX was so weird that apparently no one ever in English-speaking fandom says it correctly. And Quistis and Yuffie make sense, but are not what most of us thought until... I think Yuffie's name was spoken aloud in Kingdom Hearts voice acting or something and we all went "wait what"

I tried to pronounce Cait Sith correctly when I was working on the cosplay, but everyone who asked what I would be cosplaying later at the convention kept going "Who?" so I gave up and just call him "Kate Sith" like everyone else. :/

None of these mispronunciations actually bother me because at this point it's as good as canon for the English fandom, hahah.

I am moderately humiliated by my years-long mispronunciation of Camus in Suikoden though. Even though that's another one most people mess up unless they're into philosophy, which I am not. I still feel awkward saying it the right way BUT DARNIT I'M TRYING.

Wait, how is Camus supposed to be pronounced? It's not the way it looks?

(to be fair Suikoden has a lot of confusing names and since no one had voices until V...or was it IV? I only remember voices in V...well, no one was saying names aloud)

I was reading Questionable Content for a long while before I realized how 'Hannelore' was meant to be pronounced - I'd never heard of the name before QC, nor have I encountered another Hannelore outside of Hanners, so I parsed it as being of Greek derivation, and pronounced it Han e lorry.

Turns out it's German. Oops.

Methos (Highlander)
Ariadne (Inception)
Sha'uri/Sha're, Teal'c (Stargate) - to be fair canon isn't consistent either
Scamander (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) - I keep wanting to call him Scaramander

I read it as Her-moyn the whole time I was into HP as a young teen (i.e. the early 00s).

Also, for some truly baffling reason my dumb ass decided Voldemort was pronounced Vold-er-mort. I honestly don't even know with that one. I think up until a certain age I just randomly decided how I thought a name should sound and then proceeded to not give a shit whether I was right or not.

I may have also called Dumbledore Dum-bluh-dor. Yup.

Rolling my eyes at my thirteen-year-old self so hard rn.

I am probably the only person ever to get into Star Wars by reading a bunch of the books first, long before watching any of the movies. So I had a few names and places sort of messed up, which I expected, but by far the worst is Qui-gon Jinn. I mangled his name so badly and for so long I can't even try to pronouce it now and just actively avoid the character altogether.

If it exists, is not a common name, and I haven't heard it spoken, I've probably mispronounced it.

I got into Durarara!! by reading the novels first, and I thought Celty was pronounced with a hard C like how most people pronounce Celtic. Which made sense to me, because she’s specifically Irish(despite having a Scandinavian sounding last name, Sturluson). But then I watched the anime and was surprised to hear it be pronounced “Sell-tee”. Like how the team The Boston Celtics is pronounced here in America.

This is a completely separate thing from mispronunciations that I still find funny, but I remember someone on TV Tropes saying Celty’s last name should be something like Sturlustotter instead of Sturluson, because the “-son” part means “son of”, and the “-stotter” means “daughter of”. You know, because she’s a girl. I know they probably thought that sounded smart or made sense. But like, it’s her last name? It’s not literal? Have they never heard of any girl that has a last name with “-son” at the end? Because that’s honestly incredible.

The only reason I hope Skies of Arcadia never gets remade is because it would probably be fully voiced, and I reject the official pronunciations of several main characters' names. Fina is supposed to be pronounced Fine-ah, but I read it as Fee-na, which I think fits better with how it's spelled and also sounds much nicer. Apparently most of the English-speaking fandom did, too, because everyone who talks about it pronounces it that way. I pronounce Vyse with the S sounding like a Z, it just sounds better too, don't care. Enrique is also "mispronounced" by the entire English-speaking fandom because it's a real name that the game mispronounces. According to the katakana spelling, the E at the end is silent. No, no it's not. En-reek is not how you're supposed to pronounce that name.
