I hate to ask this, but can someone explain Critical Role to me. Explain it like I'm five, because I swear I am still not understanding it or their cartoon. Well, I understand the cartoon as a cartoon, but apparently I'm meant to find something deeper in it? Help me.

I think it's a series of podcasts about some people's DnD campaign? And they're professional voice actors, so it... sounds better than the average campaign?

Subsidiary question about Critical Role: to what extent does it have intense theater kid vibes?

I'm not a fan but my housemate is, I have heard way too much about it and cannot even find half a shit to give anymore so here you go - ELI5 with heavy salt. Do not consume if you have high blood pressure.

Base level, it's a group of Funimation voice actors playing DnD on a podcast, which has gotten so popular that they've had multiple campaigns now, published graphic novels, commissioned action figures, and then crowdfunded a Netflix cartoon.

The cartoon is presently animating like...their first campaign from years ago, and at a breakneck speed apparently, the pacing is making up for not being able to lavishly spend six hours on every episode. The sheer level of dick and sex jokes is apparently how it is in the podcast, so if that's offputting at all, it's par for the course. People who have been following CritRole for years are excited because they know what's happening. People like me who know nothing about the setting or characters are very confused.

As a fan, I'm not sure what you're meant to find deeper in it--there's only 6 episodes out so far, barely scratching the start of an arc. Any "meaning" the original campaign eventually has is definitely not supposed to be grasped immediately, so you're good there.

As far as what it is: a bunch of voice actors started streaming their home game, that stream got super popular and spawned 100s more episodes of DnD, they decided to try their hand at turning their first finished campaign an animated show, and that's what's on Prime Video right now.

Their first campaign, IMO, is very First DnD Characters and Standard Fantasy Tropes, but they have fun with it, so I have fun with it. The cartoon now is a bit wild to me because on the one hand, cool an adult fantasy cartoon that doesn't give me a headache, but on the other, this is literally a bunch of professional voice actors acting out their own OCs, which is as cool a concept as it is bizarre.

What are some of your favorite non-traditional or less known movies/books/games in your favorite (or not so favorite) genres?

I love S Andrew Swann's "Dragon-" trilogy. As far as comic fantasies go, it is pretty good. Shame I seem to be the only one who has read them.

And Willard Price's Adventure series, which is just a nice series about teen adventurers.

I adore The Oracle Prophecies by Catherine Fisher, but I’ve never met anyone who’s even heard of the books.

Or pressure cooker.

I toss whatever veg is lurking in the tray in the fridge into the cooker, then I add whatever meat product is about to go off, some rice, some spices and salt, and top it up with water, switch it on and walk away for eight hours. Maybe add a chicken stock cube if needed.

If I had either, pulled pork would be the first thing I tried. I make it in a Dutch oven at home, but it takes ages, so I don’t make it that often.
