I know lots of fans are passionately into the expansive mythology and lore of The Silmarillion. But for me, it'll simply be the best bedtime story I've ever listened to. I've never made it past the fifth chapter of the audiobook. It's so calmly boring that I fall asleep before it gets to (what I assume are) the interesting parts.

I don't disagree, in that it's not only reads like the bible in the beginning, but also it's wildly repetitive with generation after generation making the exact same mistake as their forefathers because too much time has passed for them to remember how shitty either Melkor or Sauron is and how much maybe they shouldn't be fucking weird over jewelry.

but i love it.

' with generation after generation making the exact same mistake as their forefathers'

Tolkien really had humanity's number.

I always say that I read The Silmarillion exactly the same way I read the Bible (as an atheist): for personal edification, to make conversations, and sometimes for the giggles when I'm drunk.

the Feanor saga is honestly dead funny once you get over how utterly pointless it all was since all the elves eventually drag themselves back to Valinor with zero silmarils even 1000s of years later lmao

For me, the pointless suffering of it all is a feature. First Age best age.

Some audiobook readers just have that incredibly soothing quality to their voice. My mom has been using The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo as a never-fail lullaby for years now, and it's not that the book is boring (or relaxing in itself, yikes). It's the reader's voice.

I think the Ainulindalë and the Valaquenta are some of the the most interesting parts! Ho-hum :)
