There were rights issues with the Company revival. I can't remember whether it was with Sondheim or with Furth's estate, but one of the two was really against having the character of Bobby/Bobbie be gay but didn't really have a problem with any of the other characters having their sexualities changed. Since the original show was two gay men basically commentating on the world of straight romance, I can kind of see it - I mostly just think that the changes in the Joanne scene in particular weaken the entire show. It would have been fine to make Joanne bi and have the same basic script with only a few minor changes.
