No as in it's so no good you can't call weekend.
I am not in jail, so... Yay?

Considering the state of the world, not terrible.

Considering stress-buying some charity-fundraiser perfume oils (BPAL released TX trans kids and Ukraine support blends) because I have the disposable income and they sound like they smell good, but worried I'll need that disposable income for something else as soon as I hit the checkout button.

I never liked that art style, but they were infinitely preferable to both the Science Fiction Book Club covers, which were just bad, and the boring clip-art covers on the 2000s American reissues which looked like they were trying to be Serious Literature or something, which were the only other ones available in the US for a long time.

A lot of those upper middle class white housewives were hopped up on mommy's little helpers and beer half the time.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
ooo that is ugggggly.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely accurate.

Just a heads up that someone is being an ass in the weekend thread

You are not alone. I have always loathed these weird, squished, squat images. Totally hate.

You would definitely still worry about money if your husband was the type to get his pay packet and drink most of it away within the first few hours.

Not trying to have a go or anything because there's the fact you've stated that there's a reason this is a secret, and I know it's not unusual that the extremely positive/upbeat version of housewife existence often presented in light entertainment appeals. But depending on your social class, worrying about money was still a thing.

Personally I'm glad to live in the world now, stressful as it is. I have always felt (right from my teens) like I can imagine nothing worse than being made to feel like I'm not allowed to be smart or ambitious or have any interests outwith the domestic sphere, like all that other stuff is purely my husband's domain.

Sounds like you just need a lot of PWP.....

This is a sentiment that you see a lot and I'm never sure how to feel about it, because I don't totally get why there's such a big difference between those things and the use of modern antidepressants and other psychiatric medication that we accept as commonplace and good.

Re: Motorbike question.

This is a place to start. Of course, all depends on if your character can afford one, etc....

And this is just fun.

I used to back then when I did my own secrets and the post went live at a time I could see it--now I barely leave comments to the "secrets you're not going to make" threads with no expectations, and anyway these years the posts are made in the middle of the night in my timezone so when I get up in the morning the discussions are already long over so even if a secret was made from one of my comments it doesn't feel like mine anymore.

So very annoying.
Monstous Bebe and boyfriend ran out of propane Friday so their house was FREEZING, couldn't get a refill until Saturday and had a biggish bill i had to chip in on. THEN the same day their 'fridge died, and while they had some options (FB Marketplace and an offer of a free one from someone), they needed a truck to pick up anything and deliver it.

THEN Monstrous' brakes were grinding, and the caliper is chipped, so it must be replaced - more expense! It's just been stressy and difficult for them, and i'm stressed over upcoming insurance renewal, and we had ANOTHER staffer quit the damn shelter (or be fired, i think) for inappropriate nonsense with clients.....

ARGH. At lest this coming week there will be no fucking ice and mess, and I can do some early spring cleaning.

Be safe, Anon.

UK, about 50% loves Kirby and 50% hates.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think US fandom just assumes that everyone loves them because we hear about it at a distance. Maybe that's just me though.

I mean, see the rest of the comments here...

Fine until I realized that Bond the dog looked too much like Alexander for my tastes. Has anyone drawn Anya Forger as a chimera already or..?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Back then, you could have your wife legally committed and you could rape her and get away with it since it wasn't illegal to force your wife to have sex. Women couldn't even have their own bank accounts until the 60s. On top of that, a lot of women worked in the 40s - 60s because that's how everyone could afford to keep up with the Jones'. So, on top of all that housewife business--cooking, cleaning, child-rearing, husband pampering, gardening, volunteering, and generally keeping up appearances, many of them also worked outside of their home.

OP have you ever looked to see if you might have Complex PTSD?

I only say this because the ‘salvation fantasy’ can be part of the condition.

(Not saying you have to be mentally ill to have that fantasy, it just struck a chord with me.)

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
On top of that, a lot of women worked in the 40s - 60s because that's how everyone could afford to keep up with the Jones'.

Just to quantify this, because I think it's interesting - the labor participation rate in the US for women in the 1950s was generally in the 30s. Today, it's roughly around 55-60%.

So in other words, it's approximately around 25% of American women who would not have worked in the 1950s but who do work today.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Also I'd say that the proportion of the fandom who love the Kirby covers are largely the older fans who remember them initially coming out in those and have the associated "my canon" nostalgia. I'm in my 30s and obvs there's some selection bias here but I know no one within ten years of me in age who likes them.
