I think it's kind of like buying a physical book instead of reading the same story as a PDF or on an e-reader. Maybe it's in the public domain and you could download it for free, but a book is something you can hold in your hands and put on a shelf and turn the pages. Which may not be a big thing for some people, but others really like the physical aspect.
