That is, do you have preference?

If you are trans and live in Texas, it is go-bag time. No matter how at risk of destitution you might be at if you move, if you stay you are now at risk. Grab your go bag, and run. It is that time, especially if you have kids. Rebuilding your life from scratch somewhere else is now the lesser of the two evils. Do not stay longer, you will lose your kids and you may be risking your life doing so. The risk will only increase daily now.

Tell me where I can rent a place not in Texas on $600 a month (disability money), and I'm there. I'd be there so fast. I'm currently searching for roommates online because it's impossible for me to afford rent somewhere else by myself.

I agree that Texas is a pretty horrible place to be right now (for pretty much anyone who's not a white Christian cis male, honestly) but dunno, I respect trans folks (and the guardians of trans kids) enough to believe that like any other adult, they understand when they're in danger and how to determine what their best options are. I mean they've been facing the possibility of violence or death just by being out. Threats to their safety and stability are, for many of them, nothing new.

Practical Advice Moving Thread!

(Anonymous) 2022-03-02 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hello, as opposed to the thread above telling people to become homeless, what are some good experiences you've had finding roommates and/or moving out? Or how about the opposite, any bad roommate experiences?

Currently I'm just looking online through roommies.com for roommates, and it's slow-going. Crossing my fingers that I can find a place that will be chill. It would actually be my first time moving out if I'm successful.

Re: Practical Advice Moving Thread!

I'm not from the USA, but I've moved around the world moving in an apartment both alone and with a roommate (alone 4 times, with roomates 3 times). I've always been very fortunate with my roommates, but I always moved with someone that I've knew for a few weeks prior (usually an ex colleague or a classmate), so it's different from your situation. Even if sometimes we had some little fights (especially during lockdown LMAO), nothing too disastrous happened because we set our boundaries from the beginning and we had an extreme respect for each other.
My suggestion: as soon as you move in with someone, set some "soft rules". Try to know each other's habits from the beginning. Do they prefer eating alone or in company? Do they stay up until late? Do they and you prefer having a set schedule for chores (I don't because I become anxious and I've never setted a schedule, but a lot of my friends have)? Do they have an active social life or do they stay home all the time? Share you habits and how you'd like to handle the cohabitation. IF YOU NEED ALONE TIME, MAKE IT CLEAR FROM THE BEGINNING.
Don't be too harsh or demanding when getting to know this person(s) habits. Know that you will have to compromise something, but not everything. Be flexible and understanding and HOPEFULLY everything will go well with them.

I hope everything goes well, nonny! I'm sorry I can't help more with info more specific to the USA.

Some safety advice that seems shockingly needed among many young people… do not freely advertise/share that you are leaving an abusive or dangerous situation (including being thrown out or disowned). No prospective roommate needs to know the details of your past and it may attract people looking to take advantage of someone without a support system.

Ditto to what Anon's said upthread about 'soft rules'. But also make some hard and fast rule. Counseling some of the people at the shelter about that. We tell them to discuss things like what does 'clean' mean to you, and now what does 'clean' mean to your potential roommate? What about guests, shared space, etc... There are a lot of online helps that have some stuff that I wouldn't have ever thought about, but when you read it, you're like 'omg, yes, need to discuss that!!'

Here's a good, basic 'starter', if you're interested:

Books you own both physical and electronic versions of

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-03-02 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Are there books that you own both a physical copy and an electronic version of?

Loads! It’s partly from keeping my books forever but deciding to buy the digital version sometime in the last ten years or so. But there are some series I’ve gotten into in recent years and originally got one way and then decided I also wanted a copy the other way for whatever reason (missing artwork but tons of typos in the digital copy, or getting a paperback either as a gift or because it was cheaper than the e-book but loving it so much I wanted a more portable copy).

There are books that I have both physical and electronic copies of, yeah.

Usually it's because my physical copy is inaccessible and I want to have a copy I can easily get to if I want to quickly look something up, or just read some little favorite bit.

Understanding Comics - The Invisible Art, by Scott McCloud.

Just that one, but I'm happy that I can read it whenever I want.

I mostly made the switch to buying (contracts for access to) ebooks a few years ago out of fear of dying under a book avalanche, and now only buy hard copies of stuff I really love or that is image heavy and impractical to read on my phone.

But I also went back and bought a few of my comfort reads as ebooks--lots of Pratchett, Robin McKinley, and Lois McMaster Bujold, and some of Naomi Novik's books.

And then there are the T. Kingfisher aka Ursula Vernon books that I love and bought as ebooks for myself and print volumes for my local library, which usually only purchases through Baker and Taylor and so doesn't generally buy from small press publishers. They mostly don't even add stuff to their collection that isn't available through B&T.

This is a problem and means they only had her kids books published under her real name and her horror books published under T. Kingfisher, I think through Saga/Tor.

So first I got a branch manager hooked on her ebooks by comparing them to Bujold, who she loves. Then I bought the books and she emailed back and forth with the person in charge of cataloging/collection development. Then the books got added.

And now several have wait lists, heh. If I won the lotto I'd buy them more copies.

I will say - I believe that morally, you should have a pretty much unlimited right to download an electronic copy of a book if you own a physical copy of it already. I know that's not the state of law but that's how it seems to me.

Re: Books you own both physical and electronic versions of

(Anonymous) 2022-03-02 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Zero because I have zero trust that my bought content wont be removed ever.
(Same goes for movies and series I like - i dont trust streamers or buying digital. If i want to have stuff forever, i have a physical copy)

Re: Books you own both physical and electronic versions of

Yes!

These tend to fall into two categories: books I write fic for (Good Omens, Tolkien, Sherlock Holmes, Locked Tomb) and books that I backed the Kickstarter for and so receive both the paper and the e-versions for my pledge.

Fasting Experiences

(Anonymous) 2022-03-02 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahoy, so it's the first day of Lent, and I'm using that as an excuse to do a fast... a beer fast. We'll see how that goes. Probably a bad idea. So far I'm fine (one day! of 40ish!), but we'll see.
Anyhone else giving up things?

Re: Fasting Experiences

(Anonymous) 2022-03-02 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm attempting to give up soda for the period. I'm pagan but using the date of Lent as a starting point of religious style fasting is p common.
