But the site gives you tools to prevent that from happening, which is allowing you to filter by rating. It shouldn't come as a surprise if a fic that's rated E has a spicy summary because it's appealing to the people who want to read a smutty fic.

Ok, 1) I say it does often come as a surprise as even when you filter for explicit fics, most of the info will generally be non-explicit. Titles, tags, and (thankfully) most summaries. Having a sudden line of smut in there is unexpected and off-putting and 2) I guess some could find a single line of out-of-context porn appealing? For me it turns me off the entire fic. That bit in the summary might be extremely sexy in the fic itself, but that's because the fic hopefully has some build-up and tension. Most smut doesn't *start* mid-thrust either, right? It sets the mood and the scene? At least the ones I read. But then maybe that's the reason people disagree on this, some need that and some don't?

And for some people, having a smutty line in the summary might be the entire draw. That's the beauty of it, you can exclude that by filtering out explict-rated fics. You're complaining about a thing that is 100% in your control. The authors aren't doing anything wrong by writing a smutty summary for a smutty fic.

No, because while I might not like explicit summaries, I could still want to read explicit fics? That's the entire point of this thread? That you could enjoy one but not the other?! Unless there's a way to filter out only the fic with explicit summaries, the problem remains.

I agree that those authors aren't doing anything wrong, it's their right to post whatever summaries they want. But it's my right to find it annoying and off-putting.

Your suggestion of filtering out explicit fic works obviously, and of course if it really was a big deal I'm sure people would do just that. I would. But it feels like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Again, I get it: it's not up to the writers or anyone else. It's my choice to either put up with the occasional smutty summary, or forgo all explicit fic altogether. I'll live, but I'll eagerly take this occasion to complain. (Is that not what F!S is for?) Especially since I personally cannot fathom how a summary like that is appealing even when you're looking for smut. But I suppose it must be or people wouldn't keep doing it.
