What fanfic reader is looking at comments and going "wow, there are just too many people taking an interest in this fic, I shouldn't read it"?

Who does this? Do you ever do that for fanfic yourself? This fellow writer sounds like the weird one that's too focused on statistics here, then they're assuming everyone else is like them for some reason

I’ve seen this notion stated by writers before but I can’t for the life of me figure out where they’ve gotten this conclusion from. I don’t think many readers look at comment counts or care.

You're not doing it wrong. The average reader really appreciates it when an author replies, even if it's just a "Thanks!" or a smiley.

About the only thing a high-comment/low-kudos ratio can tell someone is that the readers who like the fic *really* like it. Which can certainly lure a potential reader in, yeah?

Uhm... there are certainly reasons not to reply - some authors don't have the spoons, or time, or a given comment was on the rude side. If an author doesn't wanna, then that's their call.

But if the issue is who you're going to please in the way of potential audience-members...? I, for one, am always going to prioritise the feelings of someone who liked my fic enough to comment on it, over the feelings of someone squinting at my stats before they'll condescend to look at my work.

That's my feeling on the matter.

This. I've never understood why that sort of thing matters so much to some people.

And I don't get people who act like it's weird to reply to comments on AO3. They literally set it up to allow people to reply to comments. That's why there's a "reply" button at the bottom of the comment. If the site were worried about people's comment numbers or something being artificially inflated, they wouldn't have set up the site that way to begin with.

So yeah, OP, if you want to keep replying to your comments in general, go for it. There's nothing wrong with that at all.

On a single-chapter fic, if there's way more comments than kudos, I just assume somebody got into a long conversation in comments, and ignore the comments number.

On fics with a lot of chapters this isn't even unusual?? It means you have loyal readers??

That's bullshit. I got told the same thing when I started posting fic, but I genuinely do not care about stats or what the number of comments might indicate about my story. If somebody leaves me a comment, it makes me so happy and I want that commenter to know how happy they made me. That's what it's all about, IMO. What is fandom if not people squeeing back-and-forth?

yeah, especially since ao3 doesn't let you give kudos per chapter, so if a fic you like updates it's kinda the only way to show your appreciation!
